Crane 10308-1 springs and SA rockers

Anyone running this set up?

Just curious if there is enough retainer to rocker clearance and retainer to SA shoulder clearance.

Anyone know for sure?

Lloyd

I ran Crane 10308 springs with Crane Gold 1.6 SA RRs w/out any issues for about 30k miles.

cool, thanks man.

Anyone else that HAS had a problem?

Just trying to get all of the feed back that I can to make sure these springs will work with most rockers.

Re: Crane 10308-1 springs and SA rockers

I'm running those springs with crane S/A 1.6 rockers and I had to grind my rockers. They were hitting on the edge of the retainer and under the rocker. I'm pretty sure those are the springs that were on my car when I bought it since I put in new springs to fix my valve float since I'm guessing the springs were worn out. I used the 99893 springs which is in 10308 kit with the comp retainers, locks, and seats, and that gave me more clearance over the crane hardware since comp retainers go down on an angle at the outside and the cranes stay flat the whole way out. Just out of curiosity how do these springs compare to the 918's?

Re: Crane 10308-1 springs and SA rockers

The Cranes are fine on pressure but the springs are heavy (dbl springs) and the retainers are HEAVY. The bee hives are better in my opinion and I have no problems with the bee hives on big cams turning lots of RPM.

I was just looking for alternatives to the CM 612's on my LE1 head to see what it out there in that price range. The 612 is a good spring for the $$$ but I have heard of a few break that were set up right and on small cams.

Not sure if too much preload during rocker adjustment put them into coil bind or if they were over revved causing problems or if the springs are just massed produced or the material it is made from that could cause a bad spring to show up more often in these springs than other springs.

Either way, I am looking at the Crane 10308-1 kit or the Comp 987 springs to go on them for piece of mind.

Crane 10308-1's are $150 for springs, retainers and locks.

Comp 987's are about $200.

A pretty big increase over the $100 that I pay for the CM 612's now.

I'm using them on my 846, but I have a 10hp dip at 6400, I don't think its valve float.

Do you have any dyno or track #'s with the 846?

No not yet only got the engine running about a month ago still need to work out some bugs, really only problem with engine is my knock sensor throwing a code. But I need tires bad, cheap tires I got won't hook, and I have a violent shake under braking. Oh and exhaust leak from header collector thats driving me nuts.

I was sure the springs were fine on pressure and are up to the task of my LE1cam, I was just wantying to see if other people had (or did not have) problems with SA rockers and the Crane retainers.

Re: Crane 10308-1 springs and SA rockers

On my Impala I had a problem with both the comp 986 spring kit and crane 10308 and GMPP 1.6 (same as crane golds). The problem was with the valve tips of my FM valves were shorter than the stock LT1 which place the retainer a little higher and caused the guids on the rockers to hit the retainers. I put in -0.05" locks to have proper clearance there.

Mine were definatly hitting pretty good, I had to take quite a bit off with the dremel on my rockers.
