CPS reluctor needed?
 

HI guys new here. I recently did a cam, heads and headers in my 97 camaro z28. After I had did all the work and got the engine back in about ready to fire up, I realized the cps reluctor was sitting on the bench. I don't want to spend a couple hours taking all the stuff off needed to install it. Is it needed? If not do I need to space out the crank pulley the thickness of the cps? Help me out please. I am having it tuned afterwards and getting the EGR and AIR programed out of the computer, is the cps able to be programed out as well?

The crank position sensor (CKP) was added in 1996 for the sole purpose of detecting misfires, a requirement of OBD-2. Not required to run the engine. But there are diagnostic codes/SES light for the CKP. And without it you won't have the ability to scan the PCM for misfire count, by individual cylinder. I would assume a programmer could delete the codes. Why not just install it, since you'll have to pull the hub to install a spacer.

If the cam is big enough, misfire detection may not be practical.

Well I would install it if it was that easy, but correct me if I'm wrong but it goes inside the front cover so the water pump, optispark, oil pan, and probably the accessory drive bracket has to come off. The cam is fairly larger than stock so I think I might just leave it out.

Are you going to buy a spacer like ATI includes with their LT1 “one size fits all” damper hub? It's got to fit through the seal without damaging it, and over the longer crank key. Unless you also pull the seal.

you will need the longer 95 damper hub...or put the reluctor gear in

ATI damper/hub comes with a washer spacer you use for non CPS motors and discard for 96+ motors (LT1)
