Couple of Small Annoying Problems

Hey Guys,

I just had my car (96Z M6) a little over a month and over this time I noticed a few small annoying problems. I did searches for all of these but the answers I found weren't what I needed, so I was hoping you guys could help me out with these:

1) There is a very low frequency grinding/growling noise coming from under the car just as I am getting moving. Right as I almost let go of the clutch and start getting on the gas. It stops after about 1300rpm. Can't hear it in any other gear.

2) My brakes squeal lightly when I touch the pedal. Only happens when I am lightly on the brakes. The pads still have life left. Also my suspension squeaks over bumps and in sharp corners. Seems like the squeaks are coming from front and rear. Is this something a little grease would solve?

3) The shifter vibrates very badly above 90 mph. If I wind it out in 4th and want to shift into 5th around 90mph, the shifter vibrates so bad its hard to get it into gear. It only vibrates when I am shifting, otherwise it's normal. Is this the driveshaft, tranny mount, or something toally different.

Thanks in advance for the help. I want to get these sorted out quickly becasue all these annoying things are dirving me crazy:mad:

Anybody? You don't have to know the answers to all the problems, any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry I don't know much but will throw my something in....

As far as 1. goes, I have read about that problem with the grinding noise before and experience it myself, and everything I have read says that it is normal and does not cause damage on your drivetrain.

With the squeaky suspension you can do a search and can come up with many different fixes for bushings, coil spring isolators, ect. Suffice to say not many f-body's are quiet cars.

i used to have that problem...as i was letting out of the clutch in 1st it would vibrate and chatter a little. intil i let out of the clutch completely. I drove around like that for a while then my clutch went south. Upgraded to a ram stage 3 and no more chatter.

for #2 try some of that disc brake quite stuff on your pads and get some sfc's that usually solves a lot the fbody noises.

Tnaks for the help,

As for the grinding when starting to move, there is no vibration in the clutch or shifter, it's just a strange noise, but if its nothing to worry about I'll forget it.

bdc95ta: What disc brake quiet are you talking about? Is it a spray? Sold in autoparts stores?

Finally, I have been planning on getting SFC's installed. How much would cost for the connectors and the welding?

Thanks,

yup it comes in a spary can it's like a sticky adhesive. Some times it works and stays quite and sometimes it doesn't.

Like my mom's front calipers won't stop squecking she took it in twice and they couldn't make it stop. They tried using shims (can't spell) but nope. I replaced her brakes and I messed up the calipers a little bit trying to get those rod things out (can't remember the name right now) and I told her that's why her breaks squeaked. She needed new calipers. But this placed convinced her they could fix the problem without replacing the calipers, guess what still squeaks, bad.

...so if you try everything you can and it still squeaks it might be the calipers

For both 1) and 3) - it may be your clutch. I had similar problems until I replaced mine. Once I got that Mcleod in there it smoothed up quite a bit.

For 2) - Dude, these cars just squeak. You can replace all the bushings and then find out it is in the body or chassis. Kind of a pet peve of mine too but after I replaced all the bushings and got it all greased up, I still hear things!! To fix it, get 2 15 inch sub woofers and crank it as loud as it will go. ;-)

1. Do you have stock exhaust or aftermarket - this could be exhaust/cat-back vibration.

2. There is also non-spray brake quiet material that is sold in little packs, I never had any noise when I used it.

As mentioned, suspension squeeks are tough to track down. I would get under the car and check it out, if nothing looks worn, try tightening any suspension parts that need it. I have a few squeeks in the rear that I cannot figure out.

3. The "vibe"shaft is a common problem on 93-97's, the driveshaft could be the cause. Although I'm not sure why there would be a correlation to shifting.

1. Sounds like a throwout bearing?

1. I have the same noise. some of it it due to clutch chatter. also, these cars trans are a little on the noisy side. I replace the trans fuild with red line oil. it helped, but didn't solve it.

2. you can replace the pads, disc brake quiet or just live with it until it is time to replace them.

3. this is due, moer then likely, the stock drive shaft. The best fix for this is to replace it with aluminum driveshaft. the cheapest way to go is to buy a used LS1 unit, auto or man will do. I believe they are all the same. The vid is due the heavier rotating mass of the steel driveshaft. the faster you drive the more it viberate.
