Cooling fan only comes on when ac is on

Can this be due to a coolant sensor? Where are they located on the 96 t/a?

The CTS is in the front of the water pump.

would that ssensor throw a code if it was not working

n2ceptor Jul 1, 2009 08:05 PM

There are 2 fans... One for the engine and the other comes on when the A/C in engaged..

Only one fans is working??

The fans aren't supposed to be on until the engine hits something like 226*. I couldn't believe it was that high until the dealer confirmed it back when I owned a 95' T/A.

code

they wont always throw a code. however, if your fan only comes on when the ac is on it is most likely your cts. could be a wiring problem or a bad cooling motor. i would change that sensor first and foremost.

How hot is it running?

noolah123 Jul 2, 2009 05:12 AM

it is running over 230. i let the car sit there for a half hour and the fans never came on. i am going to try to change the sensor and see if that works.

well i changed the cts and the fans still do not work. u think it may be a wiring problem?

Are you sure the coolant temp gauge is accurate? Check the sensor in the driver's side head using Shoebox's writeup. If you have access to a scanner, check the coolant temp that the PCM is seeing from the cooloant temp sensor in the water pump.

You also need to check the fan relays. All LT1's have the stock programming at 226*F for the low speed fans to come on (mid-94-97) or the first fan to come on (93-early-94), and 235*F for the high speed (or second fan).

Shoebox also has the wiring diagram - C60 is AC, use the lower "late production":

had the same problem... turned out to be the sensor on the drivers side head..
