Cooling
Help ! I just had my Lt1 rebuilt i only have 132 miles on it. I place a 160 thremostat in the motor with a new water pump. I have no leaks, but the engine is now running hot. My fan will come on, but for some reason i have to have my A/C running for the fans to start. The engine is running hot even with the fans running. Can some on please help?
Thanks Shane 1993 Firebird LT 1 6 speed |
Did you bleed out the air????? Located below by the throttle body.. small air release valve.... Open until all air is out and fluid flows...
|
Yes i bled the air, the water was flowing well coming out the vaule. I'm new to the lt1's. My brother and i have been racing he has a 1998 gt mustang. So i thought i would be a black sheep and show everyone in our club what a real car can do. Just starting on the project.
Hostile Racing Team We have about 20 mustangs and i am the only Bird in our club. So i am kinda on my own. LOL Right now the car is stock with no mods only the 160 thremostat Thanks, Shane |
get a manual fan switch so you can turn the fans on without your ac. Flush the radiator and put in 50/50 or like 60/40 favoring the water mixture. I use water wetter by redline into the mixture as well. Make sure you have no air pockets and bleed it properly. Some people claim to run a lot cooler also after removing the egr and air equipment. You can run your heater to help circulate the coolant through the heater core and it will run a little cooler as well. To help with temps on your throttle body you need to do a throttle body bypass to keep the coolant out of the lower passage of the thottle body. I have done everything listed above, and without my heater on I am running super cool......when the fans are on the temp gage stays at like 170....super cool. Oh and make sure your not missing your air deflector or something. Just check over everything and give your car some TLC and maybe your car will drop the temps a little for ya ;) :p
Hope this helps. |
Did you use the correct "reverse flow" 160-degF t'stat? A conventional 'stat will not work correctly.
|
I ordered the 160 thermostat from hypertech i have know idea if its the reverse flow. I told them i have a 1993 firebird Lt 1. I hope they sent me the right one. How can i tell if its the right one. Also whats is the diff between the organe ati freeze and the green one. Does it matter which one to use.
|
If you got the $18 Hypertech, its probably the right one. See Shoebox's tech page for a comparison vs. a standard design:
http://shbox.com/1/tstat.jpg Green is "regular" 50K mile coolant, orange is "Dex-Cool" extended life (150K miles, 5 years) coolant. As long as you don't mix the two you should be OK, although some people hate the orange stuff. I've had it in my 94 for about 5 years (changed once when I did the stroker), and no problems. |
I may be wrong here, but don't you need to program your fans for the 160 stat? Because if you don't, the fans will not come on when you get to the 160 deg. pt. JMHO:cool:
