Cold air and headers

First question:
I just installed the Lingenfelter Supertube CAI. The directions told me to bolt the plastic piece underneath it all back up. It seems if I took that out it might get more air to it, but I wasn't sure if there was some vacuum under there or something, and that they might actually know what they are talking about. Should I leave the plastic there or take it out?

Second:
How much should it cost to have a shop install longtube headers these days?

That plastic peice keeps you from sucking up water and other crap that's all around there, and if you hit a deep puddle or something that could cause problems. But if it doesn't rain much around you then it wouldn't be a problem leaving it off I don't think.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw him post on another thread, lets get that sig updated with some mods.

I left my slash panel on just as a precaution. Otherwise you might want to make a homemade ram-air vent or something.

Re: Cold air and headers

I'm guessing, CAI, headers, and a catback. Maybe 1.6 rr's

Re: Cold air and headers

I made a home made ram air vent out of some metal flashing........was really pretty easy....well here is the link of a write up someone did of it that I followed somewhat when I did mine. http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/ramair/ramair.htm

As far as headers......I would try and do em yourself......if not you are probably looking at 500 plus dollars at a shop.

Re: Cold air and headers

Alright, I'll update the sig. My mods are:

80 Series Flowmaster Muffler
Hypertech Programming
Lingenfelter CAI
TPI Air Foil

Not really modded much yet, but it's a start. Next on the list is headers, that's why I'm asking. I don't think I'm really ready to tackle a project such as header installation since that one can be pretty tough from what I've heard, plus I can't have my car down for too long with work, college, etc. When I do get headers put on, I'll also get the CAT taken off. After that, I'll probably get the LT4 Hot Cam Kit installed. Lots of stuff to do, but it'll come.

If you guys think I should do something else before headers, lemme know. From what I've read, it seems to be the mod with the most HP gain for the money.

Im confused as to why we are guessing at what other people have done to their cars. This isnt a game show.

Re: Cold air and headers

I was a bit worried about doing the headers myself, but I was glad when I did. All you need is some friends who know what they are doing and jack/jackstands and some tools. It took us a few days with me having to stop and go to work each day. Its a good experience I think, try it yourself. And find someone who can weld it up for you.

Re: Cold air and headers

For someone that hasnt installed headers on a Lt1 before it could be a real pain in the a$$...and 96/97 are even more of one...Id say somwhere in the area of $300-500 bucks

Re: Cold air and headers

Well I never had installed Headers ever in my life. My other friend installed them in a huge 86 Chevy truck bay, and the other had moderate mods on his V6. It wasnt too bad, just follow the steps of a well written install and make sure you have all the right tools and parts to begin with. That slowed me down a day, getting the right tool. Its of course up to the poster if he thinks he wants to tackle it, but I was intimidated, altough now when after it was all said and done it was real easy. Funny part was the local exhaust shop wouldnt even touch it, since he heard it took forever to get them in LT1's. Guess he isnt all that great of an "muffler man"

The guy asked a question so I guessed. Whats the problem? And if it was a gameshow, I would win.
