Clutch Chatter

I converted a4 to m6 in a 1994 f-body. I am getting clutch chatter and feels like the entire transmission shakes only in acceleration in 1st gear and reverse. I am sure that everything was bolted tight. Flywheel was resurfaced through napa. Clutch is a dual friction Mcloud. Any suggestions on whats going on? Thanks for any help on this topic.

Clutch chatter only happens when you're engaging the clutch. If this is happening when the clutch is engaged you've got other problems.

IF this is clutch chatter then maybe one of the resident mcleod experts can chime in.. I do know the mcleod unit is not supposed to chatter..

The clutch chatters when the clutch is engaging. You were right, when I begin to accelerate, it goes away. When I try to engage the clutch from a standstill, then it chatters. This happens in reverse too. 2nd-6th, smooth sailing.

That's clutch chatter then... mine used to do the same but then I broke it in good :D and learned how do drive it.. BUT I use a SPEC stage III carbon old style NOT a mcleod so I can't really help ya much. Good luck figuring it out.

It just feels like my tranny is about to break and I have about 100miles on the drivet train now. It seems like its getting worse not better. Does chatter occur with performance clutches? and not stock?

Will this eventually go away? Should I slip the clutch in more to avoid the chatter if possible?

If there is oil on any of the contact surfaces, you will get some chatter.

I have some pretty nasty chatter with my STreet Twin/aluminum flywheel combo.

If there is any oil on the flywheel, over time will it wear off or away? Or is the only way to resurface the flywheel and clean it again?

The oil will not really wear off. If it gets embedded in the friction material, the disk will have to be replaced. The flywheel can be cleaned and reused. When you assemble these things you have to be certain that there isn't any oil on the flywheel or friction material.

Really though, it takes a decent amount of oil contamination to chatter a lot. I had the intake leak and the oil got down inside the bell housing and lubricated my clutch disk. My clutch chattered. There was also evidence of burning on the flywheel surface. If your clutch is chattering a lot, and it's due to oil, you probably have a leak.

I have the Mcleod Street Twin with Steel flywheel. When I first bought the clutch, it chattered like crazy. Mcleod said this was normal. I put up with it for 10k miles and it never got better. After 10k miles, it started to slip a little when shifting hard into 3rd, so I removed the clutch and flywheel and sent it back to McLeod for reconditioning ($350). After installing it this time, no chatter and almost engagwes as smooth as stock. I don't know what they did different, but the car is much more driver friendly now. Must be tolerance stack, manufacturing inconsistencies or something.

I will drive it this weekend and see if this gets any better. Is funny, sometimes the clutch engages like its a stock one, sometimes it chatters. I know for a fact that the surface was clean and teh flywheel was resurfaced and cleaned prior to install. The cluch I know has no oil on it. I will just wait and see for 2000k, and after that I will see what happens. I will not jump to conclusions yet.
