clunking noise?

93 a4 z28...If I'm at a stop or at a 20-30 mph cruise and I mash it the tires break loose and then I keep hearing this clunking noise around the center console or the middle of the car...Is it my transmission? Or just something normal with the car? The tires I have on there have probably about 10% tread left, so I'm not sure if it's associated with that or if it's something else.

most likely a broken tranny or torque arm mount.

Zack Dec 7, 2003 04:42 PM

sounds like the tranny mount to me

eaalto Dec 7, 2003 04:51 PM

if that is the case then what is the cost of replacing or repairing it? I checked the service records that the previous owner left me and on Oct 9 2003, he had Transmission service done says 100% exchange, not sure what to conclude from that, and it also says replace broken rear transmission mount, and that was about 72$. In 2 months would it be possible for it to have broken again?

You can check it your self and just pull out the tranny mount to see if it's broken....not sure if you have lift access or what ever but you'll need somthing to hold the tranny up. Could be a serious problem or a simple one but check the simple stuff first.

If the tranny mount is busted you should upgrade to a urethane one like 20 or so bucks from summit.

i would just about bet its a tranny mount. you can get a polyurathane (spelling?) mount from jegs for about 40 bucks i think. real easy to install.

Sounds like the tranny mount to me also. Price is anywhere from $20-$40 depending on your need for "the best." Put the car up on ramps, get the right sockets and go to town for about 15 minutes and your done.

i dont know about u guys, but i put an Energy Suspension polyurethane tranny mount on and i think it SUCKED
didnt fit that well and when it was on, made every vibration through the floor seem that much more harsh
i ended going back to a new stock one after two weeks

and btw, i'm thinkin torque arm mount/bushing as the culprit of the original problem

Tranny mount. Wait did someone already suggest that?

:p

I would describe it to be more so as a bang than a clunk. Man, no one has broken one of these in a while.
