Clarify non-PWM '94 trans v/s '95-'97 PWM tranny?

I've done a couple of searches on the boards but I still haven't been able to find a definite answer to this question

In a thread that Brent94Z made several months back he was looking to see if a '94 4L60E could be operated by a '95 PCM. I believe the conclusion was that it was possible if one had the PCM flashed to delete the command for Pulse Width Modulation since the '94s didn't come with that option or you could swap out the valve body between a '95+ and the '94s... programming the PCM of course would be the easier of the two in most occasions. PWM basically operates a solenoid that brings the Torque Converter Clutch in smoothly to make the over all gear shift smoother, right?

Also it was said that a '95-'97 4L60E with the PWM option was swappable to a '94 PCM due to the wire for the PWM not being present in the wiring harness for the '94... which in turn should mean that the PCM would not need to be re-programmed to shift the '95+ tranny properly. The solenoid pretty much just wouldn't operate in the '94 which would be fine.

I thought that was a pretty straight forward answer but I did a little more research online and I came across this...

In 1993, the fully electronic 4L60E transmission was introduced which requires a computer to operate. With the 4L60E, it is imperative to follow the interchange rules because of solenoid & design changes by year. For example, the 93-94 4L60E will interchange, 1995 Non-PWM will only interchange with the 1995 Non-PWM, the 1995 PWM will only interchange with 1995-1997 PWM, 1998+ will interchange (except for removable bellhousing).
According to this company that specializes in re-building tranny's they say that it isn't possible to swap a '96 4L60E into a '94??? But I've read posts on the boards here of people doing so with no problem what so ever??

Anyways... to make a long story short I'm looking for a definite answer as to if the transmission from that of a '96 Trans Am can be swapped into a '94 Formula which of course is running a '94 PCM. And if so... what steps would need to be taken to insure that it shifted properly? According to some guys here the boards they say none but according to a transmission shop they say its not possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I'll try to help some, although I'm no where near being a tranny expert. Yes the PWM is only for a smoother (albeit sloppier) TCC application. If I remember corectly, the PWM solenoid is only activated during the TCC lock-up process at around 45mph(and no other time). Transgo's shift kit comes with a block-off that keeps the PWM from working, so you may want one of those. The PWM trannies have the PWM solenoid along with the on/off solenoid that the pre-95 trannies have. Basically all you have to do is disable the PWm solenoid and block it off, which will let the on/off solenoid work exclusively.

The 96+ are OBD2 operated too. You've probably heard of the OBD1 guys who run 3000+stall converters have the problem of the PCM kicking into "limp"mode and the tranny won't shift at WOT. But the OBD2 cars don't have this problem, so there are some overall programming differences between the two.

Sorry I can't directly answer your question, but maybe you can use some of what I said.

Maybe Ellis will see this and chime in.
