CHanging Spark plugs on a car with headers (LT1)
 

Hey everyone, I'm helpin my buddy change the plugs on his 93 LT1 6spd Camaro, his car has BBK headers and every time we try to reach up with our spark plug ratchet the header prevents us from removing the back two on the drivers side. The back two passenger side plugs are also quite a pain for us.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips and tricks they could share to make this job a little easier, it almost seems like we may have to either get a different ratchet that isn't too awkward or worst case remove the headers.

But really how much work is it to remove the headers and just swing em sidways a bit while we swap the plugs? (BBK Headers into 4" DP).

Don't use a socket and a ratchet. Use the spark plug socket with the 3/4" hex head on the end and a 3/4" open end wrench. Makes it much easier.

Agreed, I use a spark plug socket and a stubby open end wrench. It makes short work of the tricky plugs.

Perhaps I was a bit too vague there, I bought a no name kit complete with the spark plug ratchet, spark plug socket and feeler guage which I am using. The socket that fits the Bosch Platinum's that were installing is the 5/8".

At some point during the install of the front two passenger side plugs I suggested the idea of puttin the Spark Plug Socket over the plug and then putting a cresc. wrench to turn it. The hex end of this socket is defnitly bigger than 5/8ths as I have tried a open Box wrench on it.

With this new information is there any other tips or is it just the same ones lol.

The spark plug socket is a 5/8" socket with a 3/4" hex head on the end. I'd try using this over a stubby ratchet and socket. I don't have a problem at all, but I have Jet Hot LT's. I can change all of my plugs in about 20 min. If the regular spark plug socket is still too long, measure how much the plug sticks out from the head and cut the socket down. Then, use the 3/4" wrench. If you insist on using the kit, then I can't help, because I've never used one.

I also use a spark plug socket which I cut an inch off of and a 3/4 stubby wrench.

I made my own with a $5 spark plug socket from advanced auto parts, it works really well.

how did you do that? Weld a nut to the end?

Spark plug sockets already have a hex head on the end.
