I know you have to at least take your muffler off.

This way is fast, Drill a hole and get a pair of shears you will have it out in 45 min. If you use them you may want to cut an 1.5 inch closer to front of car to get it out of tank.

You will have to remove a lot more stuff besides the muffler. From when i attempted it, I had to remove the rear springs, panhard rod and panhard brace (the one above the panhard rod), i had to detach the rear shocks from the axle to allow enough room for the axle to drop and give more space. I also disconnected the rear sway bar to allow more wiggle room for the axle. Also the tunnel brace to allow the driveshaft to move down further with the axle. Remove other parts

My best advice to you is:
1)take your time, and have plenty of light
2)wear some eye protection cause a lot of debris will fall on your face.
3) Make sure you have as little gas in the tank as possible.
4) It will be very difficult to try to angle the tank out of the bottom without damaging the filler neck.

I'd def do the "trap door" method!!! It took be about 3 hours(not counting the overnight glue dry) do it! It was VERY SIMPLE!! The only advise from me is to cut another notch, about 2" tall and 3" wide to be able to get to the fuel line disconnect on one of the lines(upper left corner of pic). Otherwise, like me, you'll cut you hand on the sharp metal. I really beats dropping the tank!!!
Jason

PS: Here's another good link on the "trap door" method.
