cap/rotor or opti?

Whats the difference between buying a cap and rotor set or an actual optispark? I'm replacing my opti and I realized the cap and rotor are much cheaper. I don't really understand why the prices are so far apart.

Haven't done one myself yet, but I think the difference is that the "opti" has the optical pickup sensor that actually senses the cam... the cap and rotor is just that... cap and rotor.

Re: cap/rotor or opti?

So when someone says they ruined their "opti" due to water or something, would they be able to replace, technically, just the cap and rotor, or when the opti goes bad is it because of that sensor so the whole thing would need to be replaced?

The majority of the time, the entire unit has to be replaced. It is the optical unit that usually goes bad.

Re: cap/rotor or opti?

That all depends. If you have the low or high res failure SES code, then you need to replace the whole unit. If you DON'T, but when you pull of the opti after suspecting it, and the rotor is horrible, then you might be able to get by with just the cap and rotor. I had the second instance once when a mechanic left all my vacuum lines disconnected. Two weeks later the opti took a crap after it rusted through!

Re: cap/rotor or opti?

I've done both and theres basically the same amount of work to replace the whole thing...I did the cap/rotor replacement and then later had to do the whole thing...Save the trouble and replace the entire unit while you have everything apart...
