can i bleed my own lifters?

i am finishing up a topend freshening, and as i am installing new rockers, i noticed that my lifters are frozen. so i took the 2 from cylinder number 1 to my machinst, and he bled them for me. if anyone has dealt with a machine shop, then you know it could take awhile sometimes...

so as to speed up my project, i was wondering if i could bleed the remaining lifters at home? if so, a link to detailed instructions would be nice. i have been researching for a few days, but i havent been able to find anything.

thanks

If you have a bench vise it is very easy...I never re-use lifters except for OHC applications, in which I use our arbor press.

Basically use something to press against the inside of the lifter while in the vise, tighten it down slowly and you should see the oil come out, back it off and repeat several times...you will feel when it bottoms out, dont try to go any farther. You will have to rig something up to keep the roller from driving you nuts, maybe a 20oz coke bottle cap will keep it from moving in the vise.

well, the motor was supposed to be a ground up redo by that scumbag joe prince, in nj. i ordered a 383 LT4 with a s'charger. however, i soon discovered that i was scammed bigtime. when i recently dropped a valvespring, i discovered much of the stock valvetrain was reused, on top of the overall shoddy workmanship.

so, either they are stock with 46k miles, or are replacements with 4k miles on them. this is the first time i have been this deep into a motor with my own hands, so i am still learning as well. there are no id marks anywhere on the lifters, so i couldnt tell you if theyre new or not.

would it be better to buy new ones? looking recently, i could end up spending up to 500 beans for a set of 16.

thanks for the info machinist
