cam

Ok I have been doing some research and I am trying to decide on either a cc503 or a cc306 cam. I want something that will lope a pretty good bit so the 306 seems to be a better choice. What would a 306 with unported heads be like for a street car? It is a six speed with 3.42. Or does anyone have any recommendations for a cam that will sound better than the 306 with the same amount of streetability?
Also would I have to change the springs if I could find a cam with the stock lift with a smaller lsa?
Thanks for the help.

6speed with 3.42s is wrong for the stock cam.

The 306 is known to surge and you will really feel it with an M6. Last guy I knew that did this ended up losing interest in the car because it sucked to drive, even after gears.

If you pulled the heads and put a thinner gasket in the compression bump would help it but it is still not a great choice for a stock shortblock.

Want lope and enough lowend for the crappy gears go much smaller and on a tighter LSA. It will lope and you will be able to use 6th at under 90mph.

ok thanks for the quick replies. 96capricegr do you have any recommendations for what would be a better cam? I really don't want the cam to surge to bad but I want the lope.

The CC306 is made for racing, more a top end cam. The XE503 pays more attention to midrange and will peak HP lower. Something that might bridge the gap would be a XE 230/236, not crazy lobes but better than the old magnum ones, and would peak lower than a CC306 but make better midrange and close to the same top end power. They sound pretty racey too, I havent heard one lope like a CC306 though. XE503 isnt a bad cam, probably fine for 80% of people who swap cams.

Changing the springs would be necessary with any camshaft change.

If you are planning on racing your car go with 306. My buddies m6 306 car has a nasty kill sheet. If you just want the sound and streetability go with the 503.

ok I will probably go with the cc503 since I will probably not really race it much. I will probably buy my parts from summit so would need the cam 07-503-8, and the springs 26918-16. I have a cai and will probably get some pacesetter headers. Would this be enough to support the cam and how would drivability be before I have it tuned?
Would these springs be best and should I get long tubes or mid tubes?
Thanks for all the help and sorry for the so many questions.

Jesus tap dancin' chri....

Please consider using another spring. Search 918 spring broke or failure. Or dropped valve, blown motor, any of those should do. Some get lucky, some dont, I'd rather not take my chances.

I did the search and will definetly go with a different spring now. What would you recommend for the 503. Thanks for the heads up.

I have a 94z 6spd, the gm 847 cam, stock heads, pcmforless tune, headers, intake, stock 3.42's rev limit 6500 all day long. And still spank stangs. I drive it daily and get 21mpg freeway driving.

There was a bad batch of foreign made 918s YEARS ago. IMO more broke or got weak due to missuse. The 503 would not constitute missuse.

I have put a lot of miles on 918s myself so I know what I am talking about.

It would be drivable but I would not drive it to long or let it see high rpm's. The springs I went with the crane 10308-1

I have a 306 in my DD on stock heads. There is some surge under 2000rpms, but I think it is over exaggerated. And the loss of low end power is definitely bs. If I get on it, I'm gone. And as soon as I give it some gas from a stop its a nice power accel all the way to where I want.
