Cool Build tips on a driveable S/C 383 or a N/A 396

I want to build a driveable S/C 383 or N/A 396, and what HP/TQ would I be able to make with a driveable set up.

Your question is VERY broad.

OK, broad answer to go wqith your question.

On NA use 9.5-10 compression and a cam with a 1500-6000-ish rpm range.

On a SC engine, use 8.5-9.0 compression and 7-8lbs of boost on the same cam.

I should of said what would be a good set up for a driveable NA 396 or a SC 383. Can 500RWHP be obtained and still be driveable. Is a SC worth the hassle. How much boost can you get away with I was thinking about a 6psi procharger and keep the compression at 10:5:1 as long as the bottom end was built for it and I had all of the supporting components, heads, cam, exhaust, tune, ignition, and fuel system.

As far as the N/A 396 goes how radical could I go and still keep it driveable. How much compression, I was thinking 11:5:1 a good set of heads and a cam with duration around 230's intake and 240's exhaust and lift around 550 to 600 and have all of the supporting components as mentioned above.

I have a extra LT1 on a engine stand that needs a home so why not build a killer set up for the street/strip.

Real question is do ya have the budget for it...

I don't care if it's a motor build or your building a new computer (as I am now) whatever you do take your planned "budget" mulitply by 1.5 (50% more) and find out how to get that much money so you can complete it.

^ that is a major consideration indeed!

Everyone should consider that FIRST, so we
can see some cars reach completion around here.

I've seen too many projects being aborted that are
near completion lately. There's nothing that is more
of a buzzkill than not finishing what you start.

If I start this project it will be finished. Not only the engine but I'm talking a whole new drive train as well. No sense in building a killer engine and not have the rest of the required components. I've been doing some research and I can get the short block built for about 3k and thats a 396. I thought I would go with one of Combination Motorsports cylinder head and cam package's either stage 2 or 3.

I think 500RWHP N/A is possible, in the November 04 issue of GMHTP there is a 94 Z28 making 550 Flywheel HP with a N/A 396. His heads are home ported with 2.00/1.60 valves. His intake is also home ported. His compression is 12.0:1, I would lower that a bit like 11.5:1. His exhaust is LT with a Y-pipe and a Borla cat-back.

Good luck with that Jetman.... nobody around here has done a 500rwhp motor for that little.

Doubt it would be much fun to drive on the street either.
