Bad NEWS

I have a 95 camaro z28 and I just found out I broke my car. It started to knock and I took it to this guy that does work for me and he took off the oil filter and took it apart and it had metal all in it. He thinks I spun a crank or rod bearing, but hell have to take it apart to know exactly how bad it is. And since it's apart a probably gonna have to be rebuilt, I was wondering some better parts to go with.

First does anyone know how high of a compression I can run while still using pump gas
Also which works better on lt1's double roller timing chain or gear driven
And what are some better pistons to use.

Anything else you can think of would be appreciated.

mods now: slp cai, msd6al, no cat, flowmaster, cc305
need: stall, headers, programing

Thanks for any help Brian

1. with aluminum heads and good gas you can probably run around 10:1 compresssion and be safe...

2.DO NOT USE GEAR DRIVE!!!! the noise from the gear drive plays havoc with the knock sensors.

3. SRP Forged...I have heard good things about them.

and install the best rod bolts you can afford.

you can run a much higher compression than 10:1. you should be able to run 11:1 pretty easily on pump gas.

I agree. You can run higher than a 10:1 compression ratio. The stock ratio is 10.5:1. 11:1 is probably the most common.

you might laugh at me... but i thought the lt1's stock compression is 10.5:1.... anyways if you have sunoco 94 octane regularly available to you, like i do, go for- 11.5:1, but i wouldn't recommend more than that... and then you'd have to make sure you get 94 in it all the time

Smile

oh yeah... and if you can get 11.5:1 and have deep enough pockets to consistantly tap the 104 yo'd be my hero

I thought the stock lt1 was right around 10.7:1, i think you should be able to run 11 with no problem.

93 will do you fine on 11:1 preferably 94. 94 should carry you on 11.5:1... 104 is just frosting... sweet and delicious, but not necessary.

drain the tank, whine the crank

spin the cam, feel it man

stay up late, pump all 8

push the pedal, melt some metal

light the tires, feed the fires

feel her peel as you bury the needle

your machine this nifty? I love my 350

I'm running 93 with 11.75:1 compression without a problem...

Honda S2000 have 12:1.

How does the 305 act with no stall, headers or gears?

Milling the heads is one of the most common ways of uping your compression along with different pistons.

Well IF you are doign a full rebuild I would get the block done. It may be toast any way if you spun a Main bearing. Most common is rod bearings. If block is usable get it fully machined. This may or may not include honing the main line. after that all other surfaces will be indexed off the work. Pick a nice light flat top piston and shot for a .005 piston to deck.

I like to use the Felpro #1074 head gasket. It crushes to .039. with a .005 deack this will give you a .044 Quench. This is very close to optimum by MOST standards and gives you a second chance in the future. Deck the heads as needed to get them straight.

With normal -4cc valve notch pistons this will give you a 11.36 to 1 Compresion Ratio. Very streetable on a LT1. if you are worried you can run Four valve relief pistons and get it right at 11 to 1

I would also pick a nice cam to go with it. Also a good time to have the heads ported if they have not yet been done.

Good luck!

I'm running 11.3:1 compression on 92 octane.

Get SRP pistons.

Port your heads from someone reputable.

Get a decent cam and new lifters.
