Backfiring

My car has always backfired, (Gurgled), a little when I let off of the gas. I have Hooker LTS and an off-road pipe and Hooker Cat-back. The other day on the freeway I was cruising at high speed with a bud and he tells me that I backfired and a three foot flame shot out of my rear tailpipes. Here is the question.

1. Backfiring has lately gotten worse. What causes backfires?
2. Car doesn't idle at as high an RPM, I'm down around 600 RPM now used to be about 800-900 and car appears to be stall prone until it warms up. What controls idle speed?

I have recently replaced the stock coil with a Crane unit because my stock coil was breaking up at high rpm. Other than that no significant changes.

1993 Z28 M6 Ported Heads, 58MM TB, 1.6rr, cc305, PCMForLess tuning, Hooker LTs w/ off-road and Cat-back. Thanks.

Update:

Now it appears that I'm significantly breaking up when the car is warm over 5000RPM. Is it possible that I've already wasted this coil. What else would cause these symptoms.

Thanks

I would call around to different auto stores and see if they will lend out a diagnostic tester so you can see if you are throwing any codes, The 2 near me require a deposit and then give your money back upon return of their tool. They work great, tell you everything. The new coil could have gone bad, but doubtful, you have other issues. Have you changed your O2's this might cause an overrich problem. The opti will make your car backfire if its going and cause some of your symptoms, also it will make the car harder to start, or it might stall out on you, and the opti does affect low end RPM

Since he has a 1993, he can still flash any trouble codes with the SES light.

holy sh*t man, 3 foot flames, thats a good way to stop someone from tailgating you!
anyways, that "gurgling" noise, i thought it was normal because my car does it.....if im on the gas for any period of time and i let off of it, it makes the "gurgling" noise and when i slowly press the gas pedal again, it backfires but i duno man its not like a misfire or anything......weird
