Anyone tried Putting atf fluid and changing ur oil? I heard it cleans the engine
Is that true?

Re: Atf

If you keep your oil changed regularly, you don't need this. It's an old remedy to clean out a gunky engine. Breaking that gunk up can have disadvantages, though.

Re: Atf

let's say if it's burning oil or wanna get rid of sludge...even lifters tapping, whould that help at all? How about adding to your fuel tank? It does clean the fuel system right?

Re: Atf

I don't think you want to add it to your fuel tank, but you can get some sea foam and run that through the crankcase, should help with build up and such.

Re: Atf

If ya think it's burning oil now, wait till ya run some of those cleaner's through it, it will start changing it's own oil.

Re: Atf

I am iffy about using it...however, i just wanna know if the ticking will stop?
If it is the lifter, will it go away?

Re: Atf

Adjust the valves and see.

Re: Atf

Opened the valve covers and checked out the rockers and they all looked good. I am assuming it's one of my lifters. Tried Engine oil supplement (EOS) and that did not do **** for me.

Re: Atf

The "mechanic in a can" method is not very reliable.

You can't tell about valve adjustment by just looking at them.

Re: Atf

ATF is rumored to contain a lot of detergets but that simply is not the case at least not in modern times, this may have worked in years long past because the ATF was thin and flushed things out better than thick oils of the day.
There are better methods but mailordering a $25 bottle of something you never heard of may not be the answer you want so I will suggest another one.
Do a few oil changes at like 1500mile intervals or so and that can do a lot of cleaning even with the most basic cheap oil, the "high milage" oils often contain some esters which will clean, and diesel oils contain a lot of detergents and can do some cleaning as well, I have run Rotella T "synthetic" 5w-40 for awhile and it does a good job, the first fill of it the lifters and such got loud after a few hundred miles and a filter change was all it took to quiet her back down. Suggests to me it was cleaning and depositing crap in the filter restricting it.

Re: Atf

i WOULDN'T USE NOTHIN BUT SEAFOAM to clean my engine. Stuff works well, and shows improvement. But like General Shoebox said The "mechanic in the can" won't solve serious issues.

Re: Atf

I have heard of people doing this, and putting ATF in their oil and fuel system. In personal opinion is just plain out stupid, I would try seafoam well before I would use ATF.

96capricemgr 10-20-2005 06:58 PM

Re: Atf

Don't use Seafoam in oil it is naptha think paint thinner, and alcohol mostly with a light oil in there too, maybe even some water. Use it in fuel fine, through the intake fine but not in oil.
