Airbag removal?

I'm going to remove my passenger airbag. This evening I removed glovebox and some of the bolts that attach the dash. Do you remove the console to move dash back. I believe there are 4 bolts that hold airbag assembly and you move dash back a bit and drop bag down does that sound right. If anyone has a thread that details the job please chime in. Frank95z

You have to pull the COMLPETE dash as far as I could tell. I swapped to the 97+ dash, and I couldn't figure out how to remove the airbag until I had pulled the dash out. The bolts are on the inside of the dash.

I could only guess it weighs about 15lbs.

Ryan the bolts that you're talking about are they about 1/2'' size? Frank95z

I'm looking at the dash (its still sitting right here), and I'm pretty sure it was a 9/32" bolt.

Sorry Frank, I meant the bolts that bolt the airbag to the dash itself.

You don't need the dash out, only moved forward to access the SIR bracket

I'll skip a few things here as i'm assuming you know how to remove them...ie getting to the instrument cluster..removing the center console (makes it much easier to work around)..once you've removed your instrument cluster...you only need to remove a few more things.

I'll try not to forget too much...remove screws that hold dash onto the firewall (the ones on top). Remove the bottom sill panels (that run accross the drivers/passenger side door so you have access to a larger nut on each side of the bottom of the dash.

Fold down your glove box, there are about 4 screws that need to be removed in the area where the glove box covers. What this does is detaches the whole bracket assembly that the airbag is connected on the inside of the dash to so when the dash comes forward, you move the whole air bag bracket forward which gives you access to the 4 airbag screws you mentioned above, this way you can remove the airbag easily.

Remove under your knee bolster the bolts that hold your steering wheel to your dash.

Now that all is removed your dash will come foward quite a bit. This is enough room to remove all heater core/AC components (if you want) and remove the air bag.

Thanks Steve i got it . Only bad thing that happened is that i cracked the dash cover. i was trying to access a bolt and didn't realize it was so brittle. I super glued the piece back and now I have "Frankendash". Airbag, controllers, and module weights 20# total not a bad mod. My car now weighs 3185 with me in it. I ran 11.42 at 3330#s so I'm looking for mid 11.20's in the cool weather. Frank95z
