? about rebuild....cam/timing chain/opti,H20 pump?'s
 

alright, i am helping my buddy build up his 96 LT1 and i have a few ?'s. we have it back from the machine shop and so far the whole bottom end is in(pistons,rods,crank,ect). we are going to install the cam (224/230 comp),cloyes "true double roller" timing chain,opti,CSI elctric H20 conversion kit.

so, my buddy just bought the block so we dont have a lot of stock parts. i need to know all the litle stuff we need to get this done. i know that stock, the opti is driven off the cam, and the water pump is driven off its own drive. so the ?'s are

1. since we are using a electric water pump conversion and just the old housing, what do we have to do about the old water pump drive?

2. why is it necessary to use an electric water pump with a cloyes "true double roller" timing chain.

what is the stock stuff i need to install all this stuff? thanks

The drive shaft from the pump gets taken out the front of the housing when you convert to an electric pump. The hole in the back of the WP housing gets plugged with a freeze plug.

The shaft from the engine that sticks through the timing cover can stay if you aren't taking the timing cover off. In your case, you have to pull it out. Then, you have to find a way of plugging the hole left by the WP drive shaft in the timing cover.

The stock LT1 timing set has a provision to drive the water pump from the cam gear. The Cloyes does not have this. So, you have to run an electric.
