About 1-2" of play in the steering wheel in my 96z ... wtf?

Hey all,

There's about 1-2" of play (a dead spot - no response) in the steering wheel when i turn it left/right. Anyone know what this might be caused by? A loose screw? Worn rubber or some other material? I could use some help on this plz!

thanks!

Exclamation

Should be no play. Does it wander? Probably outer tie rods. I's get it to a good alignment shop soon and have all the steering components checked. I wouldn't wait to do this...

I just went through this a couple of months ago--ended up being the steering rag joint. The dealer replaced the entire steering rod w/joint and stated some rivets had become loose.

But I have to warn you that it took a lot of convincing from me for them to believe this was a problem--YMMV

The test to do is to open the hood and see if you can easily rotate the steering shaft with the engine off--this is the giveaway.

Its the bushing in the steering linkage.

Happened to me.

Buy a new linkage from a wrecker.
