As some of you know, I sold my 95 Trans Am to a buddy of mine about a year ago. When I sold it to him I told him it would be a good idea to do a tune up because it still had the original plugs and wires. Well, he finally got around to doing this a week or so ago at 99,000 miles!!!
The car still ran good but he had one of his buds offer to do it for $75 so he jumped on it and ended up giving him $100
He said after looking at the plugs that he couldn't believe the car still ran... the ground electrodes were "worn" almost all the way back to the bend and that the center insulators were basically gone!!! What's even more surprising is that he said with the new plugs and wires, he didn't notice any change in SOTP performance. Just better gas mileage.
Anyway, I believe GM used to tout a 100,000 mile tune up with their platinum plugs but people here RARELY ever get that much. I just about couldn't believe it when my buddy told me he had 99,000 miles on my old Trans Am before he changed the plugs and wires and was just curious if anybody else has put this many miles on a set of plugs and wires?

well, my car has about 85XXX on it, all the receipts came with the car and I dont see anything about plugs and wires so, I am assuming there the originals. about a couple weeks after getting my car, i put it on the lift at school and pulled one of the plugs, and it didnt look too bad. I would love to get some new ones in there, but I dont want to deal with the hassel just yet

i chg'd mine fm Delco to Bosch just after 100k--- they were dry and almost as new- no corrosion or oil on them-really!
I'm still with the original wires. Will probably chg plugs again and wires sometime this summer.
I've been lucky i guess---must be the lack of abuse. I've never burnt any rubber, but have been known to top 150 miles plus only three times.
Bet I am not alone with these types of stats...

i think mine need changing after 98,XXX miles. Is there any Plugs/wires that work exceptionally well or should i get whatever

I changed drivers side plugs and wires a couple of years ago, but never got around to pass side. Just changed them since I had to take the heads off at 105K miles. Plugs didnt' look TOO bad......wires looked fine.

I've got 69k on mine, so far so good. I would expect them to last 100k with proper maintenance.

My buddy only got to 75k miles and then his car wouldn't start. Ended up being up till 5 in the morning changing his plugs and wires, but the car ran afterwards. Needless to say I missed classes that day....joy of college.

104k and it still ran great, sadly i wrecked my formula though

I ran on the original wires on the passenger side for 110,000 miles (because when I saw what a pain in the *** it would be to change them stock for stock, I got lazy). When I did my headers, I put on Taylor OVC wires, and I noticed a large improvement in gas mileage. Can't be sure about the SOTP difference, but when I did change the plugs as preventative maintenance, there was no noticeable difference.
Damn, I'm impressed!
I often hear the stories where people take the plugs out at 20,000 miles and all the little platinum disks are GONE!
People are generally doing better than I expected which kinda tells me that those of us (me included) who changed our plugs/wires at around 30 to 50k miles might have done so prematurely

Well I'm the high mileage king when it comes to stuff like that. When I buy a new car I usually change out all that kinda stuff... You know the basic fluids wires and plugs. Well like mentioned above. I have all the receipts for my car from when the last owner (only owner) had service done at the dealership. No spark plug or wire change can be found. And I confirmed it with the last owner who said, "You know, I don't think I ever have changed those things." (Old Lady). Now if you find that suprising. I recently had to change the opti after I decided to "wash down" my engine and didn't cover it up well enough. Took it to the dealer to replace and once again, no paperwork on it ever being done, and the corvette tech there said it look purty old. So whats the magic mileage number I have waited to the very, very, very last possible moment to tell you its..........155,000 miles. Yes you heard me right. The car was still running like a top. But I definitely noticed a difference in idle and acceleration when they did get replaced. It goes to show you that its just a big chance kinda thing. Some people replace 3 optis a year and others replace one for the life of the engine. Weird eh?!?

My experience has been that the stock plugs/wires are fine UNTIL you mess with them....they just don't like being disturbed. If you've change plugs but didn't change the factory wires...you can almost count on doing wires soon...doesn't seem to matter how careful you are with the boots. YMMV,Originally posted by Brent94Z

I'm the original owner of my car and it is still running strong, 27+ MPG, 279rwhp 310rwtq @ 88k miles, and all on original optispark, plugs, and wires. And....and...I washed my engine at least 20 times with a can of degreaser and a low-pressure garden hose before I ever heard some say "better stay off of the optispark"...
But, Jet-Hot LTs are going on sometime this summer so I'm just going to do the replacement then: new opti, new plugs, new OVC wires, new waterpump, new O2's, etc.

LOL...I've washed my entire engine bay since day one and still continue to do so using the degreasing foam (apply it first and let it sit while I wash the rest of the car) and low pressure rinse at the car wash...never had an Opti issue in 72K miles. I must have gotten one of those super-Opti's. Originally posted by BitCypher

The only thing I DO cover is the Crane box...that'd be just crazy to get wet.
