As for body styles in 97, I can think of 3 distinct. Base/Z28, RS, and SS.

Base (v6)/Z28 (V8) are the ones you see all the time.
RS (v6) had lower body extentions.
SS (v8) got it's distinct hood and spolier.

Visit the F-body FAQ to see differences between model years.

http://www.f-body.org/faq/4/index.htm

As far as looks go, the only difference between the SS and the other cars is the spoiler , exaust tips, and hood. That's it.

There's really not much variation. On most years the ground effects were options on all model Camaro's. Some V6's have the Y87 option which includes performance rear axle ratio, better suspension, alloy wheels, and dual exaust tips.

So would it be cheaper to get the Z28 and then the spoiler and hood that the SS has if i like it or just get the SS?
