95 Z28 help needed (again)

I just got my 95 Z28. But, it is making a whining noise from the rear.

It makes it anytime the car is on (idling, not just driving).
Almost sounds like an electric fuel pump on it's way out.

Does this car even have an electric fuel pump? Maybe the noise is normal or typical. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lance

I would bet it's the fuel pump. My buddy had this problem in his TA. We thought that it was something to do with the stereo system. Then when we could get outside of the car we could tell it was the fuel pump. He replaced it and hasn't had any problems since.

I love this site. I always get an answer so quickly.

Is there anyway to tell if the pump is bad, before replacing? Also, can replacement be done easily?

My main concern is that I do not want it to fail while driving to work.

Replacing the fuel pump is a pain from what I hear. Honestly if it was me I'd probably pay a shop to replace it. Buy a bigger fuel pump to replace it, just in case you do some serious mods down the road You might go over to the nitrous forum and ask those guys what kind of upgraded pump they are running.

Check the fuel pressure with a gauge. The pumps make a little noise. You may just not be used to it. Even a loud one does not necessarily mean it is about to fail.

Just what I was looking to hear.

What (how much) pressure should the pump be creating?

Maybe this is something that I should have the dealer determine or atleast a very good mechanic determine.

By the time you paid the dealer to tell you, you could have bought a gauge at the auto supply store for $35, checked it yourself, know what the real reading was and had the gauge left over to put in your toolbox.

Pressure range as 97 SLP Company Car said.

Probably right about buying the guage and doing it myself.

I am pretty handy with cars, but mostly with older cars (like my 70 chevelle).

Anyone got some simple instructions on how to connect a fuel pressure gage to my 95 Z28? Then how to get proper reading (ie, at idle or across varous RPM's).

Thanks,

Lance
