95 LT1 - oil pressure sensor
 

Help! Ca anyone tell me where the oil press. sensor is on a 95LT1? How easy or hard is it to access and change...My car loses oil pressure all the way to zero!, when I come to idle at intersections or stops while driving. Itis only reaching about 40psi at 3000rpm, but it will drop as I decellarate to 20psi and then to zero and check gauge light comes on. I'm also experiencing power loss when pressure drops. I am thinking eith a bad sensor or the oil pump..checked the oil(which I just changed) and it looked clean.. I used a fram filter.

A bad sensor won't cause the engine to run poorly. The problem is elsewhere...like a pickup that has fallen out of the pump.

To answer your question, however, the sensor is located behind the intake manifold..mostly on the drivers side. You can see pics of it on Shoebox's page... www.shbox.com

I changed the oil pressure sensor( using shbox pics...thanks shoebox!!!) I was able to lay atop the engine, find the little ..... and replace it.. I will spare you how in blindly taking it off by hand I broke the housing off and had to use that special tool to get it completely off! So now to change the oil and get my Z on the road again.....

thanks BW...you are correct, I also have to put in a different weight oil as I found out from my mechanic and several others on this forum....thanks everyone I was recommended a 20w50 or 10w40;which would you recommend or have you heard was a better weight?

I HIGHLY recommend a different brand of oil filter, too. A brand other than FRAM.

A few years back, I changed the oil and filter to a FRAM on my 415 CID mini-rammed L98 and when I fired the engine, I got ZERO oil pressure. I re-installed the old oil filter (AC Delco) and oil pressure MAGICALLY returned to normal.

NEVER AGAIN!

k, I've heard Mobil ! was the best to use, has any one had success with valvolines filter?

I think the guys from Amsoil would disagree...although I use Mobil 1 in the 'vette and the T/A.

I second Jake's comments on the Fram filters. I use a Moroso racing filter and haven't an issue...

You should be OK with the oil recommended by the factory, which is 5W-30. The factory also recommends 10W-30 if your engine is never exposed to sub-0*F temperatures. If the engine is getting tired, the 10W-40 might be OK. Do not under any circumstances use 20W-50. That is not recommended for the LT1 (at least not in normal driving). The "20W" means poor circulation on cold start, and that's when most of the engine wear occurs. The "50" means its very thick at engine operating temperatures, and your engine doesn't need that. Wastes HP to pump thick oil, and increases the wear on the oil pump drive gear. Just as a reference point, I run a 25W-50 racing oil, but ONLY when running a 300-shot of nitrous at the track. For daily driving, I run a 10W-30. Both as recommended by the engine builder.
