95 lt1 died
I was driving my 05 z28 today (87k miles, new opti), and it just died. No warning signs, didnt act like it was stalling, it just flat out died. All of the lights were on, and never dimmed. It wouldnt start for about 5 minutes, then started. I had to crank it for about 2 seconds and then it fired. I pull it out of the road, and into a parking lot (about a 16th of a mile) and it did the same thing. 5 minutes later, it started up and drove home fine. Any ideas?

Sounds ignition related, where did you get your new opti from?
|
If it didn't throw any codes, I would check the coil, ICM and fuel pump.
|
I just bought the car. I can call the guy and ask where he got the opti from (its a buddys brother) if that would help. What is the ICM?
|
Is it normal for the voltage to be just above the "danger zone" at idle, and jump up to around 13 at any rpm over idle?
|
morning bump...
|
Maybe the ignition switch or the lock cylinder? I had mine turn off like that going about 75 down the interstate.

Update. It did it again, and this time, i smelled burning wires. The driver side fan dosent work, so Im thinking that becuase of the headers, and the lack of air coming through, that the coil or the ICM got fried. Am I on the right track on that?

Did you scan it for codes?
|
Yea, and the weird thing is, there wasnt any codes even though my Service Engine light is on. I went to 2 different autozones, and used a Tech-II at my school and they all said the same thing. (or lack of anything)
EDIT: If I have a MSD 6al ignition box, would I have to get a MSD coil, or would a factory one work? (I got another factory coil, but I dont feel like wasting the time to put it on if it wont work.) |

I think we would all love to drive our 05 Z-28s. :( |
I said 95 in the title. If you have any ideas, please let me know. I just replaced the ICM, and now its even worse. Now, when it starts (will start 1 in 10 trys, if that), it acts like its not getting any fuel. Anything higher than idle RPM and it dies. I noticed it was acting like it was stalling, and then it got progressively worse as time went on while driving it earlyer today.

Check your MAF sensor. My Z died on me one day driving down the highway. Turned out it was the MAF....$400 for a new one at the time. It didn't throw any codes either.
