52mm TB

I have an LT1 and was wondering if buying a 52mm TB is really neccassary. I can get one for around $150, but will it help much. I have CIA, but basically a stock LT1, so will the TB do much for my car. Any information is appreciated.

I am looking at getting it from these guys if anyone knows about them or has bought from them, what did ya think?

The price is OK on the throttle body but no real bargains on the other stuff on that page. Unless you plan on heads and headers upgrades it probably wouldn't be beneficial. $150 could be spent on something better if it is a daily driver. The stock throttle body flows 590-600cfm I believe. Plenty for street performance.
You could do the throttle body coolant bypass and get some more peformance out of the stock unit.

I'd suggest waiting till you had heads/cam. Like already mentioned, the stock 48mm flows fine unless you go to to the big things plus LTs. Spend the $$ someplace else.

about the TB coolant bypass, are there really any gains, cause I have read alot of different stuff...I also heard that if you bypass when you shut your car off the heat risses to tb making it hotter than when the coolant goes through, also that in the winter your tb could freeze up without the coolant

because right now I have my TB out and if theres up sides and no down sides to this mod I can easily do it now

thanks

I have read about a dyno proven small hp gain when engine is at normal operating temp with this coolant bypass setup. Never heard of a TB freezing in winter. The bypass job is really easy to do. Cost about $2.00 in parts. I have seen it done a couple different ways with different looking pieces. All the same idea. There are diagrams online to do this. You can't go wrong. Do a search.

Get the TB. Why? Because if you don't you will always wonder if you should have. JMHO :)

On second thought, I don't see any air foil on those TBs. If you go with e.g. AS&M they can probably hook you up with one with an Air Foil for around 200 + core.

So in this instance, I'd say don't waste your money on this one and as was already said the 48MM will flow enough for mild mods.

I really don't think a tb will give you much gain at this point in your modifications.

If you think you might want one, contact atljar on this page, it lists on that page that he has one of these throttle bodies maybe he can assure you of the quality.

The money is better spent elsewhere.

Thanks all for the great info. I am actually looking into getting pacesetter LT's and the off road y pipe, so would this change any of your answers. Should i go with the 52mm tb if i get the headers or will the 48 still be adequate. Also, I do already have a tpi airfoil so that's not a big deal for me. Thanks for your help

The question remains: how much air is my engine using? Unless your mods increase the air used, then the stocker is adequate.

The intake manifold is ported to accommodate up to a 52mm TB. Anything larger will require enlarging the intake (no biggy).

I went with the 52 just to make me feel better. I do have ported heads and small cam, however I could probably still have gotten by with the stocker.

I believe (might be wishful) that I have better throttle response with the 52, but could be my imagination.

I'd still go with the 52 just to give me the assurance that the engine was getting all it needs and more. JMHO:cool:

Hey weav...There is a really nice 52mm on the for sale board by member named 'atljar' for sale if you still want one. asking $175. thread just says 'lots of LT1 stuff' for sale. A good buy.

weavz28 07-15-2004 11:14 PM

alright, thanks ya'll for the great help. I think if i decide to get the headers i will get the 52mm TB. Otherwise, stock will do me just fine for now. And i'll check out the post and see if i like that 52mm TB
