4.10 or 4.11 which is better???

The difference is the combination of teeth

4.10 is 41 / 10

4.11 is 37 / 9

Let me know what you guys think..

The more teeth you have the more crammed it is, and the less material each tooth has as a base.

Not sure if it's the ring gears or the pinion gears that always gets chewed up (I would guess the pinion) but whichever part gets chewed up more, get less teeth on it.

The only person in the world that has 4.11's for his 7.5 is Brent our moderator. The rest of the world has to do with 4.10's. What luck.

Actually anyone who has bought GM Motive 4.10s recently has 4.11s. That includes me. I've had mine for over 6 months now. Theoretically they are stronger. But the first time I took the car to the track they started to whine real bad, even with a solid pinion spacer and differential girdle. Then again what do you expect with 400+ rwhp, drag radials and a stick shift.

This is good knowledge, thank you. Except for your problem.

Heh, I couldn't convince a bunch of people in one of the local clubs that Motive 4.10's are 4.11's. Like I didn't notice how many teeth were on there after a few hours staring at them during the install I was vindicated when UPS dropped off their packages

I haven't had any problems with mine yet, same setup as grease.... although I don't haven't any strip time on them, just "regular" abuse

You know, I have to question what everybody says about gear whine. I had 4.10's installed by a shop that I trust very much with my car. It took them 4 times to get rid of the noise. These were new Motive gears. Recently, I went back to my original 3.23's, and that was done twice, but still makes noise at different mphs, at decelleration and at neutral load on the gears. I just wonder at everybodys statement( If they're set up right, they won't make noise).

My car whined with Richmond 4.10's. I recently switched to Richmond 3.73's and no noise at all.

The 4.10s only whined at 40mph and that was it. I think it was the way they were installed.

I agree, but still whenever gears are changed, people complain. The factory must have a secret that nobody knows about. Mine were done as per the Helms manual, and still, not quite right. ??? Who knows?

actually the 4.10s are stonger. its all about tooth contac. less teeth on the pinion means smaller diameter gear and less contact with the ring. think of it as putting 400hp thur 1 tooth or dividing up 400hp on 2 teeth. its petty simple when you look at it this way.

The one thing you're not taking into consideration is the considerably larger teeth, even though there are fewer of them. There is more contact patch on the 4.11's then there is with the 4.10's. Think of it as putting 400 hp through one large patch or straddling two smaller teeth. The 4.11's mesh deeper than the 4.10's. Generally your rule is correct when speaking in general terms of ratio, ie. 3.42's will inherently have more torque capacity than 4.11's. The tooth design of the 4.11's is superior to the 4.10's though. 4.10's should be easier to make quiet however.

Well my gears whine or rather I can hear them whine because I have a Spohn race torque arm with a solid steel bushing. Therefore it transfers all the noise to the inside of my car. but after going to the track last week, they whine 10x more.

Was that Dragway 42 near Lodi? I saw the pic on your site. It's the only track I've ever seen with a house right behind the start lanes. I used to run at that track years ago. The last time I was there was in 1969.
