396 options??

Well, I have all the parts to put the 396 short block back together but I am up in the air on heads and induction.

Here is what I have:
Lunati crank
Lunati rods
Ross dish pistons (9.2-1 with 64cc heads)
Crazy Lunati cam. Somewhere in the 250's at .050 for intake and high 240's exhaust duration. Not sure on the lift but I'll be having it completely sped'd by a friend
4 bolt mains with nice billet caps

I just tuned a 396 car for a guy that had a Vortech S trim, aftercooler, little Lunati cam and untouched stock heads that did 505 hp and 522 tq at the wheels. I would be more than happy with those numbers. I have a set of GTP stage 1 heads and a ProCharger P600B setup with the 3 core intercooler. I would probably have the heads ported further.

Would this be a waste of time? Should I just sell the 396 parts and do a nice 355?? Or will a set of nicely ported stock heads or LT4 heads and the ProCharger put down some good numbers?

These questions should be asked in either F.I. or LT1 Tech forum. Transfering to LT1 Tech.

Keep in mind you'll need a nice deep oil pan/windage tray to clear the stroke on a big crank

I dont understand. how could building a 396 shortblock be a waste of time? I guess that depends on your intentions with the car. do you want a fast car, or a could-be-faster-car-if-it-had-a-396-car? so what are your goals, and why do you think you wouldnt want to make it bigger cubic inches? the only draw back if you use all the same parts is price, time to install the parts due to the custom fitting/clearancing, and price again. you will need othe parts to support the bigger eng. like bigger inj.s, maybe bigger fuel pump to support allthe HP, bigger cam, bigger exh. system, bigger ind. system, etc.

if your wondering how much HP you will gain just from the CIDcomparing 355 CID to 396CID, keep in mind that the bigger eng. will make alot more torque down low, and not rev. as high if not built/matched properly. '

be more specific this time please. so we can answer your questions.
chris

and to help you avoid wasting your time, send me all your 396 parts and I'll send you some 355 parts and we'll both be happy. lol

By waste of time I am meaning is it just a waste to use ported stock heads and the P600B? The heads and P600B are definitely suited for a smaller cubic inch engine and they would be choking the 396 to some extent. Machine work on the block is top notch; the clearancing is done via CNC and everything is balanced perfectly. I want to make sure I will be making good power with the 396. I know that similar 355's with ported stock heads and P600's are making low 500's at the wheels. IF the 396 will be bottle necked and making "only" about the same power, I consider that a waste of time. If there is still an advantage, I want to install the 396.

well, I would think there would still be an advantage, cause you'll still get alot more low end power over the 355. Im not sure about the p600b's limits though. you will need to pulley it more to get the same boost I do know that. how much boost are you plannin on running? Id prolly call ATI and ask them if that blower will push enough air for that 396 at Xboost. stock ported heads will be a comprimise on that eng. Id think some nice AFR's would be better suited and build bigger power all across the board.

Couple of things, first the P600B isn't too small for a 396 sbc, procharger has built big blocks using this blower so that's not an issue but I would think you would want to step up to AFR's or something similar to feed that 396 if you really want to make hp.
That said i don't think you'll have any problem making 505 rwhp with the setup you have now, do you know what your heads flow? Also is your intake ported?
