383 Building ?

My motor kinda went. So I was thinking of doing a 383 stroker kit. What all do I need to do? and Where can I get a kit? I have the tuning (lt1edit). I have a decent cam the xe 224/230. Just wondering what modifcation I will need to make this work. What is my best route. Any help would be great.

It all depends on what you want.
Go everything forged for over 450hp.
Cast will be fine for up to or in the area of 450.
If youre gonna juice, go forged.
If youre gonna blow, get some lower compression pistons.
NA get some higher, put it in the low 11s compression.
NuTek and Combo sell good kits and build them too.
IRS and tons of other online companies sell the rotating assemblies for you to do it yourself or get it assembled balanced locally.
Thats what I know from reading about a 1000 other 383 posts, no first hand knowledge. Good luck.

Youll also need machining ofcourse...IMO unless you go with a power adder you can stay with cast internals..

Do a search a ton of stuff will show up.

Does this sound like a decent 383 Stroker kit?

SCAT cast steel 3.750" stroke crankshaft
6.0" SCAT I-Beam 4340 moly rods w/bushed small ends and ARP bolts
a set of Probe forged pistons
Clevite-77 or Fed-Mogul bearings
Sealed-Power moly rings

Along with the machining, is there something else I'd be missing? Thanks.

Sounds cool, but wouldnt forged pistons be a waste of money if you dont go forged crank, im not saying they are, im wondering, i would think youd either want both or neither to be forged???

Well, I just listed off the description, but there is a caveat that you can upgrade to the Steel Crank Upgrade, for a fee. Maybe I can work out a custom deal with them, because they are basically a machine shop first.

Forged cranks are a very good deal more $$ than a cast crank. So if you never plan on blowing or spraying, your never really going to be over 450-500 hp, and a cast crank/hypereutic piston combo is good for that.

You'll need to get a new timing set, oil pump, and all gaskets. You'll need new tuning for the new setup. It'll run on the programming you have now, but it will not be ideal for the new combo. You'll have to either get a new oil pan and windage tray or modify your stock ones to clear the larger stroke crank. If you don't mind me asking, how much is that rotating assembly that you listed? I bought a similar setup from www.pmeracing.com.

The scat crank is good up to 700 HP, its more than sufficient.
That looks like a good rotating assembly......my only advice is to plan to spend way more than you think you will. It adds up fast!!

Not neccessary but it would be a good time for ported heads, etc since everything is all apart...

This is a very true statement.

I'm looking at www.strokerkits.com , and the LT1 383 stroker is $1250. Supposedly it will work with the factory fittings and such, but I'd probably replace the heads and cam at the same time. Do you guys think this is a good place to start?

I don't know how much that kit is that you priced out but I wouldn't use a cast crank. You never know what you might decide to do with it in the future and most of us always want more power.
I've been looking into this a lot because I'm trying to decide what to build.
You can get Eagle Hbeams on ebay for $350 which seem to be very good rods
You can get the entire eagle 4340 forged rotating assembly balanced for about $1560.00 and thats with Srp pistons and the Hbeams
You can go direct to Callies and get a Dragon Slayer crank, Pro Ibeam rods by Oliver and Srp pistons for about 2,000 plus balancing.

The nice thing about some of tghe Ebay/internet companies is you don't have to pay for shipping or tax so ou can get a little better set up for the same price as your cast set up.

From What I have been told by some of our advertisers is that if a cast crank goes it goes to pieces. A forged crank will just crack and probably won't trash your heads and everything else.
It's like buying insurance.

Hope this helps

Can I use stock injectors with a 383? I think they are 24lbs. now. Also can the stock oil pan be used?

You might be able to get away with the stock injectors...it would be pushing it though. You can use the stock oil pan also...it may need a little massaging though....
