Most of the time a stall converter will actually stall a few hundred RPM's less then what it is advertised.

i bought mine from a local LA place called mojave green. they advertised 2400 it stalls at 2400. the converter will still move the car at a lower than advertised stall rpm. the advertised number is the rpm that you can push your brake pedal to the floor and rev to without the car moving forward. my stall is 2400 but if i just barely touch the gas it still rolls at 1300 to 1400. with brake on it wont move until 2400. i would guess you could brake up to at least 26 with advertised at 28. where did you get the converter from. company reputation has alot to do with it. how big is it?? a stock 12" can only get up to 24ish. if its a 12" converter then your stall cant be as high as 28. they cant make a 12" stall that high. thats why the sizes go down to 10 9 or i think even smaller.

your around town driving shouldnt be much different at all. you would be the only one who noticed that change because of your familiarity with the cars performance on the stock stall converter. 1800 sounds high off idle. i am guessing maybe an 11" or 10" if its really a 2800. hope that helps.

Re: 2800 stall

He is refering to the size of the converter. 10" or 11", the smaller the converter, the higher its potential to stall. I have a converter that is advertised at about 2600. Now my brakes suck pretty bad so I dont have a whole lot to keep me in place and my car will start moving at about 1600 RPM's. When the say 2800, that is when the converter will go into lock-up and start transfering 100% of the power. On the inside, a converter is a bunch of clutches and fins that start to spin as fluid is passed threw them. Even tho your car wont sit still to 2800 RPM's, it could still very likely stall to that. A good way to tell is to start from a dead stop, give it alot of gas and right when u feel the car jerk, that is where the converter is locking up. Dustin.

Re: 2800 stall

I think the obd1 like yours have trouble with over 2800 stalls.
I have a vig 2800 in my 96z28. When I got it installed a was sure the tranny shop had not installed it. It feels just like stock. I did a few launches and guess its in there.
I had to play with my rev limiter and shift points as was bouncing off the limiter with the stall.
I say to people my vig is basically an invisible mod. I can't really tell its there except when I punch it or stall the car up. I could easily have went to a 3000 or 3200 and doubt would be that noticeable. Not sure how noticeable other makes of stall would be. I also have 3.42 gears and that might help a bit as others have complained of feeling of looseness with some stalls. I have a 2400 b and m in my 80 ta and it feels looser than the vig 2800 and its non lock up of course.

Re: 2800 stall

Do higher stalls effect just your everyday driving? Does it make your car run higher RPMs all the time?

Why are you angry?

Are you sure you understand what "stall speed" means?

Re: 2800 stall

i'm running a 2800 stall on my car and you can see all my mods. my car isn't a track car though so i have no clue if a higher stall would be better. i already had 373 gears installed before i installed the Yank 2800 stall i got from SLP,so i have no clue how much of a seat in your pants difference it was from stock stall.

Re: 2800 stall

I have a vigilante convertor. It works great and yes it will takeoff at about 1800 thats perfectly normal but it should flash to like 2000 or 2200. These measurements are with a fairly bolt on car also but if you have a built motor or a 383 or something the stall will change but not that much. And if it is really a vigilante convertor it is a good convertor so i wouldnt worry unless it starts to stall out at like 2500 then you might have a problem. Hope this helped.

Re: 2800 stall

For instance I have a vigilante 3000 and it will flash close to 3200 with my 383. If I foot brake it I can get about 2500 out of it.

Re: 2800 stall

Those who worry about "high stall" converters have never drive an quality 9.5" unit. My wife doesn't mind driving my car with 2800 not even when it still had 2.93s and the weight of my car "should" make a stall not drive as well as it would in an f-body. If you do gears and get a lockup converter you can lock it up for most driving speeds you spend much time at so then it basically disapears.

The 2800 Edge is one of the best mods I have done to my car, so good I went and bought a 3400 from them that will go in soon.
