2 quick ?'s for A4 + 3.23 guys

1. What RPM are you at at 80MPH?
2. What gas mileage do you get on the highway between 70 - 80MPH?

for me,
#1 is 2700-2900RPM
#2 is 18-21MPG.

I am thinking the lock up convertor isn't locking up correctly, because sometimes it sounds like it's engaging and it drops down to 2500 RPM and the car feels more "connected" the engine doesn't rev as freely.

I also think the car might be running a little rich. Just trying to figure it out before I do the 2700 mile drive out to CA.

The car does have 150k on it so I'm not complaining though

I wish I got as many MPG as you do.

ochinkruta 01-21-2003 02:06 PM

The rpm sounds about like mine, but I've never done mpg at a steady 80. My daily drive keeps me at 70-75 for most of the time and I pull 21-25 mpg if I just drive to and from work.

I believe I'm right around 3k at 80, although I can't be sure. It seems to me that I get my best gas mileage at that speed too. (around 23-25 mpg)

thebrainhart 01-21-2003 07:10 PM

Yeah, @ 80, my RPM is somewhere around 2600 I think, and I'm not sure what my highway mpg is, but my average is 16-18, with about 80% freeway.

Roadmaster 01-21-2003 07:11 PM

@100 mph my car is pulling right around 3,000rpm

I have only had my car on one long trip. That was from Indianapolis to the U.P or Michigan. 600 miles I averaged 25.3mpg... I was absolutly amazed!!!! Granted this was with very few WOT events. I think I averaged something like 65mph on that trip.

If I remember correctly 80mph is right around 2,800 in my car

Keep in mind... you are asking for comparisons at a certain RPM. Our tachs are known to not be very accurate at all. But, they are pretty consistent in that they typically read about 200 RPM high :D

FactoryZ 01-22-2003 10:23 PM

at 80mph I'm not sure, I drive the speed limit ;)
at 70mph I'm at 2000 rpms in OD. As for gas mileage, i havent checked, but I think im just as high as you.

goog point Brent. My M6 idles at 1k (Tach) or 850 (Datamaster). My A4 Idles at 600 (Tach) or 450-550 (Scanmaster).

Yeah mine used to totally lock up like that but now it sounds like it locks but still revs like it's not. I used to even be able to accelerate while the converter was locked and the RPM's would rise very slowly as I did! Of course if I gave it any REAL gas it would have unlocked and the RPM's would have went right up. I don't know whats wrong with it now but I think I should get it checked out soon cause i'm probably getting worse gas mileage this way. As a matter of fact I know I am cause the RPM's are higher than they used to be while just cruising on the highway.:(

Lt1 I think I know what you're talking about. If I accelerate slowly onto the freeway (When I mean slow, I mean slow, like getting on the fwy at 50mph with a looooooong merge ramp) if I slowly take it up to speed, the tach will register a good 300RPM lower than if I were to accelerate normal or fast. I'm thinking that my TCC solenoid is "wore out" (if they can wear out) or the clutch inside the TC is wore out (if they can wear out).

I don't know enough about trannies, but I thought that lock-up converters have a normal friction clutch in them, just like M6 car (obviously not the exact same) but I wonder if they can wear out after lots of miles. My car has 150k on the clock. I know the tranny was done at 100k, but I don't know if they reused the old TC.

Oh well, driving it until it breaks :)

Then comes the stout 355 and built A4

Also if it's locked and you touch the brake, you should be able to notice it unlock and then lock again after you let off the brake. It should be locked at like 45 MPH or a little higher so try it at that speed.

And my torque converter was just put in like two months ago so I know it can't be worn out. I'm gonna get it checked out as soon as I get some spare change.

I noticed that your goin to Cali in march, you lucky bastard!! I'm seriously considering getting the on the highway to some place where it's warm. I can't take the cold anymore, i'm sitting here on the computer with a hoodie on and i'm still freezing!!

I know at 2500rpms I am at 75mph. Be happy you get that good of gas mileage. I see about 18 on the hwy if I drive at 70mph the whole way while coasting downhill.

At 80 mph the factory tach reads about 2,500 to 2,600 rpm. I know that the tach reads high but, I've never bothered to check it with Datamaster. During my 80 mile (one way) commute to work I get 21.5 mpg. That is a combination of city (stop and go) and highway driving. I'm very pleased with the mileage. These are such great cars. Going to keep my 95 until I find the right C5. Peace. :)

On the High way it pulls mid 20s failry easy. At about 70 your barley doing 2K at the most. I think my car has gone as low as 1800rpm cruising on the high way with cruise on, flat Texas roads and 3.23 gears. But when my foots modulating speed I can usally expect to spin 2200 at the most.
