1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
Alright, so I'll be adding a couple videos so you guys can hopefully hear it. I'm not sure what it is, sticky lifter, exhaust leak, etc. I just did an oil change, used synthetic 10w-30. I did pull the valve cover off, everything at least appears fine. The car is new to me, I've only had it for a week. It's idling at right under 1k rpms, not overheating, and oil pressure is fine.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
hard to tell from internet video.
You can buy a cheap auto stethoscope for around $4 at Harbor freight and probe each exhaust and valve cover bolt to see if one in particular makes more noise that others do you have roller rockers? you may also have a exhaust leak at manifold or a cracked exhaust manifold or broken exhaust manifold bolt you may also have a lose rocker adjustment or possibly a lazy lifter all of these things can exhibit the same type of sound |
Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
Ok. I'll pick one up and start poking around. And I don't think so? When I pulled the valve cover, everything at least looked stock.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
Hard to tell without hearing it ... but def use a stethascope. Forever ago, someone had a weird ticking sound like that which could not be located. They put headers on (deleted the AIR Pump) and the sound went away. There was some talk about the diaphram (in the AIR line going into the exhaust manifolds) being damaged and making the noise. Others thought it was a hard to find exhaust leak.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
In my opinion by what you can hear in the video, I'm sorry but you've spun a crank bearing. Unless the video distorts the sound really bad that's what it's is.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
If I drop the oil pan, should I be able to visually tell what bearing has spun?
|
Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
Yeah drop it and pull the ends of the rods off first to make sure it's not them and then keep on going.Hopefully you won't have too much damage, I went through this before it's not something that you can't fix.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
You may have to get some new parts or machine work if it's been running like that for awile.

Re: 1995 Z28 engine ticking noise
In my part of the world western PA you can buy a used lt1 sometimes can find a 4 bolt vette motor from 600 to 1000 that's what I would do personally.

Jdblood202...I just bought a 95 Z28 back in September & my car makes that noise when I first start it up then goes away after it warms up.Did you ever find out what the problem was? I don't want to drive my car much until I can find out what the problem is. Thanks in advance.
