No, you can't just take out the thermostat, it's there to let the coolant stay in the radiator long enough to cool the coolant off. If you take it out, your car will probably overheat. Just get a 160 thermostat, they're not that expensive.

Be sure to get the right one. The small block Chevy t-stat is not the correct one.

Be sure to get something like a Hypertech 160...it's only like $20 or so

Yea make sure you get it from Jegs or sumthin because its very important to get the right one. LT1s have reverse flow cooling systems....just double check

Just get the 160 one from Jegs or Summit. Do not get one from a regulat SBC. Make sure it's the one for the reverse flow cooling system.

Yes, they do open and close, but the LT1 requires a particular thermostat. It is unlike the $4 SBC thermostat and is made for the passages in the water pump. So, get the right one for best results.

I worked at Autozone. They do not have a 160 LT1 t-stat except for the Hypertech. What you will get is the small block Chevy if you ask for a 160 t-stat that's not a Hypertech.

Autozone is notorious for giving out the wrong thermostat.

Yeah, the 1970 LT-1

Take a look at a stock LT-1 thermo and a stock SBC one and you will see the difference.

I had Summit send me the wrong thermo. I told them my year and engine the sent me the SBC one and I didnt know I had the wrong stat. till I looked at Shoeboxes Tech Site. Yikes I ran all summer and never had a problem. I switched it to a Hypertech just to be safe but never had a over heat problem or go past 160. Got luckey????

Some people don't have problems, but it is less efficient. Without the long themostat, some heated coolant gets sent right back into the engine before it gets a chance to go through the radiator.
