Whining coming from the engine!
Whining coming from the engine!
Hey guys. I am trying to fix my cousin's '98 Ls1 Camaro and got a couple of questions.
There is a whining sound comming from the front of the engine, and when listening to it with a stethoscope, I can hear it the strongest at the top belt tentioner pulley. Is this a common problem? If so, do I have to replace the entire pulley, or just the bearing? Any idea how much it costs? And lastly, can it be anything else. I have rulled out the A/C compressor, water pump, alternator and the PS pump. Thanks.

Re: Whining coming from the engine!
Not sure what to say. I have a whine too, in my 98 Z, but its my PS pump. It gets louder when I turn the wheel, and whines with the RPM of the engine. I think an underdrive pulley will solve the problem. Maybe try that.
Re: Whining coming from the engine!
Belt tensioners are commonly replaced. Mine went bad 2 years ago. But it was so bad, the belt was slipping, and driving me nuts!!! Takes about 5 min to replace. Not too expensive if I remember, about $40-50. Guess you could start there, and if it isn't, then take it back.
