Re: Temp Gage

A lot of guys install the plug into the block freeze plug just above the starter. Another way you can do it is to pull the brass plug out of the rear of the passenger side head (by #8 cylinder) and install the sending unit. You'll have to drill/tap the head for the sending unit or use an adapter. Tests have shown a 1-2* difference between the head and block locations...either will work OK.

Good question, Bailey.
Who makes an aluminum tube with 1 1/2 inch ends with a 1/2 NPT hole in the middle? "Be Cool" has a 1 3/4 inch tube with a petcock. The hole for the petcock is probably a 1/2 NPT hole and a racer could remove the petcock and install the fitting for a water temp mechanical gauge. I have measured the upper radiator hose and it has a 1 3/8 I.D. I don't think it would be advisable to stetch it for a 1 3/4 tube. I think the hose would fail eventually because of the stress. I think a 1 1/2 inch tube would work fine. Moroso has one that has a 1 1/2 inch end with the other end 1 1/4 inch. I don't want to use it. It would probably work, but I need a tube which is 1 1/2 inches on both ends.
I read in my LS1 service manual that the 1999 LS1 water pump directs the water into the block, unlike the LT1 which is allegedly reverse flow (heads to block flow). Anyone know if either is true?

Re: Temp Gage

Well, Bailey, I guess there weren't any tapped and plugged holes in the LS1 block or heads.
