Starting problems!

Im the proud new owner of a 98 Z28 M6 that's loaded to the hilt. Sadly, I had a problem last night after the car made the 200 mile treck from San Francisco with no complications. We cruised around town for about an hour and went to one of my friend's houses. After showing off the car I didn't latch the back hatch all the way but we went down the block to another friend's. I left the key on but the ignition on (blower and heater running, not radio or lights) and we chatted for about 25 minutes at most after which the battery appeared to have gone dead and all the locks and electronic stuff was reset when I tried to start the car. The lights wouldnt turn on but the solenoid clicked for the first tries. We ended up having to jump it but I havent had problems since. Any ideas as to what went on and will I have to replace the batter now (original 68k miles).

New battery couldn't hurt......but you probably just wore it down to where it didn't have enough juice to turn the car over.
