Exclamation Slighty Overheated engine question!!!!!!

My blasted 20 amp cooling fan fuse blew again....2 time in two years. The first time I had disasterous results in which I had to have the heads decked in order to true them up. The block was ok though. The last time I mistakenly let it overheat I slammed a fuse in it as fast as I could(temp guage was pegged past 260!!!) and got it cooled of fast with the fans. Now, almost the same thing has happened again....I was letting it idle getting my autotap ready when I got to the car, heard some something boiling, jumped it the car, and saw the temp guage part way in the red. Not pegged though...maybe about 250...255. I shut the car down and I'm going to let the car cool naturally after my last experience. It's nowhere near what it was last time....steam coming from engine etc....in fact no steam at all this time. My question is this....Is it better to let an overheated engine cool off slowly as opposed to getting it cooled down quickly? I would think slowly would be better, because the metals would not contract as quickly, and possibly cause warping. Anybody know for certian which is better?

in my opinion, i feel that immediately turning the car off is a good idea, and then worry about the fuse later. if the car is overheating, might as well turn it off so that it isn't having to try to work under those conditions....my .02 cents.
