Unhappy Rotors

Hey Guys/Gals,

I've heard this tends to be a comman problem on the F-Bodies. My rotors became warped at around 5,500 miles and the dealership machine shaved them. Now at 15,000 miles i'm having the same problem vibration when breaking at freeway speeds. So I'm thinking that these GM rotors should be replaced if i'm going to constantly have problems with them. So my question to you guys is what brand did you purchase and their total cost? Also if you change the rotors out do you need to install performance pads or anything or are their any good braking packages that you can recommend? Any infomation would be helpfull!

Thanks,

Steve

AutoZone (AimCo) rotors and a set of Raybestos QuietStop pads will run you less than $200 / set (that's for front rotors and pads) and are an excellent choice.

When you get those new rotors, make sure you do your own work or make sure the shop tightens your wheels correctly. My '98 has 48k on it and no warpage at all.Every single time the wheels have been off they have been torqued back to the correct specs and in the correct star pattern. If you don't do that then you run the risk of some scrub with an air-gun warping your new rotors.Good luck.

Yep, I have 17000 and had my rotors turned about 1000 miles ago for being warped. They also had major heat cracking. They turned most of it out, but still some minor stuff and they are turned to the minimum thickness.

I second the torque check. Anytime it's been anywhere they have over torqued the wheels, Except Germany where they use a torque wrench every time. So they obvious understand the value of doing this properly.

I have never used the "Extremes", but the $39 regular AIMCO's held up very well on the road course. They held up a LOT better than KVR blanks which cost several times as much.

Talking

I just ordered a set of crossdrilled/slotted front rotors from JC Whitney (yeah, I know). I figured I'd try them out as they were only $65 per rotor. Can't be worse than stock...
