Rev. in neutral

This guy I know has a 2000 TA and revs his car to redline in neutral and thinks its ok. He also does it all the time. I am afraid to go over 2500. Is it ok to rev in neutral and if so how high is too high for an LS1?

I've revved the engine upto about 5000 rpm maybe once?.................BUT, there's also a difference between doing a quick "blip" on the throttle to rev it (1/4 to 1/2 throttle) and fully hammering the gas to the floor and holding it there.

It's definitely not good to repeatedly scream your motor while in park or neutral. Tell your buddy to stop doing that.

There was a video posted here a while back showing some assclown bouncing off of his rev-limiter like 10 times. I had to cringe. I mean, just the sound alone tells you that it is not healthy for the car.

Reving the car up high in nuetral is horrible for it. At least 15 times a summer some *** clowns around here where I live are always hitting me with " rev it up ". They clearly drive around a rice burner or are just plain brain dead. Next time your buddy revs his engine up to the redline you should smack him in the mouth because thats what he deserves for treating his LS1 like that.

Obviously its bad to redline it, but I never knew it was bad to rev it at all in neutral....I learn something new everyday!

Ya he is an idiot. ive told him time after time. he slowly takes it up to like 5800 or so rpm and leaves it there for a few seconds. The most i have done to an LS1 is tap the throttle and it never went past 2500. It just makes me cringe when i hear it and im waiting for something to break. Plus it has 80,000 miles on it 2. Maybe i should just punch him in the side of the face next time. Ive told him enough times.

I think this is one of those long standing wives tales (Internet myth?) with no facts to back it up. I could be wrong, but I do not see why revving the motor with no load on it is worse than doing it with a load on it. If anything I think it would put less force on the bearings.

Does anyone have a technical explanation of why it is worse?

Chuck, I think the risk of revving without load on the engine is that it will easily over-rev itself, and then there would be a very high probability of floating the valves, hitting a piston, and causing some pretty harsh damage inside. I agree with you though, I don't see how it would do any harm to things such as bearings and such, but my guess is that the valvetrain is most susceptible to damage from over-revving.

Thanks Pete.

Does the rev limiter not work in neutral?

It does, but I think you could still over-rev before the rev-limiter takes over. But then, I always hate the sound of an engine bouncing off the rev limiter................it just doesn't sound healthy!

I agree about disliking the sound of hitting the limiter, although I have hit mine more than I care to admit.

I can't see the engine revving much past the limiter.

just installed Hooker Catback and my buddies dad kept revving it and I was about ready to cry I didn't wanna ask him to stop cause he' helped install it. But I guess I did revv it once or twice (maybe more) just to hear the sound, but I don't make a habit of it normally. I could make my 1990 Volvo the loudest sounding thing in the world, doesn't mean it's fast.

hmm.. the only reason i wouldnt rev mine ls1 hard in neutral is because mostly the only time id be at a stand-still TO rev it in neutral is when ive just started it and the thing is cold.. id NEVER try and hurt my baby when shes cold.. welcome to LS1 piston slap? o and also all these people saying redlining the engine is BAD? its not going to produce the longest life for your engine, BUT some people ALSO call this "redline" the.. *gasp* POWER BAND.. yeah. thats where your engine makes the MOST POWER.. so all this wonderful horsepower our LS1's put out.. check the paper work. i drive a '99 camaro z/28 that put out 305 rwhp at 5000 rpms stock.. yup.. thats the start of the redline. awsome. dont fear the unknown but then again im also the kid that doesnt have the gumption to tell my friends to "just take my word for it..", no.. i have to go out and demonstrate it on public highways >_<

yea..i know its bad, the highest i've revved my'n for a split second in park is 4K..i didnt even mean to rev it that high..Okay, dont get me wrong, i am well aware of it being bad for the motor, (my freind hung a valve in his moms minivan from revving it to redline with no load)..But i too am interested in reading some technical information..some mechanics, that have something written about what exactly it is thats so bad...I always tell my freinds not to rev there cars up with no load..and they just ask me why..i say "its not good for it" they asky again "why is it not good" and i just sit there with a blank look..its one of those things..that you know is bad, you just cant explain it..so does anyone have any technical write ups, or explanations on why its bad?? or any links?? I've searched all over the net with no luck. thanks for any help.
