Replace stock aluminum pistons with Mahle pistons?
 

I have a 1998 Z-28 that I've owned since it was new. I am going to install the following new engine parts: GM hot cam, Edelbrock heads, Crane rocker arms, pushrods and valve lifters, FAST 92mm intake manifold and throttle body. My question is, is there anything to be gained by replacing the stock aluminum pistons with Mahle pistons? Thanks for your opinions.

If the engine doesn't need a rebuild, or you dont need a more durable piston (forced induction, or nitrous), and you dont want to change compression; keep the stockers.

The Crane rockers will cause valve float. The stock pieces are VERY good.

Why the GM Hotcam? There are far better choices available.

Unless you plan on porting the Edelbrock heads, don't bother. They're terrible out of the box. A ported stock casting or even a stock 243 head is better.

LOL, the stock pistons are Mahle pistons. You might not really need them for your application, but if you did need new pistons, they are a good choice. Their high silicone forged pistons in the Power Pak they sell are really a good value. They are coated and come with file-fit rings. I used the dish pistons in my engine, and run 15# boost, and they take the heat really well. They are a nice upgrade from stock.

Very true, how many miles in your ls1? You might want to look into texas speed and performance. They have good camshaft packages that will go with the heads you have or about to purchase. I was about to do an engine rebuild on the Formula in the sig but--look at the sug. :cry:
