Rear Gear Lube - Any Suggestions?
Rear Gear Lube - Any Suggestions?
Hi everyone,
I am going to change my rear end lube this weekend while I replace my left axle bearing. Any suggestions on what brand and weight to use to replace? Also, has anyone had axle bearing problems or is it just me?
Thanks,
Jason U

Save yourself some trouble and replace both axle seals. If it has been making noise for awhile you may need an axle shaft too. If your not sure if your axle is ok, make sure to show it to someone who does. Would suck to get it all back together and still have a noise. I just bought my Z and had both bearings and an axle replaced under warranty 3 weeks later. But I also had a leaking diff cover among other things. GM certifed doesn't seem to mean much.
As far as what oil to use, check your owners manual for the minimum type/weight. I could see spending a few extra bucks on better oil cause you don't need to change the rear diff as often as engine oil. As far as what performance oil, I'd check your local performance shop.

I filled mine with Red Line 75w-90 oil. I didn't really know any performance gain or that it runs any smoother, but it's just peace of mind. It's tough to find. I got mine at Reibes. Autozone, Pep Boys, and Kragen don't carry Red Line.
Royal Purple should work well too. Reibes has that also. You will need to get a new gasket and gasket sealer when you put the rear end cover back on. You will also need some sort of pump to pump the oil into the rear end.
