rear end question inside
How many of you think JLO's rear end is exceptional? J/K I do actually have a question about the 10 bolt standard in our cars. I have seen all over the place in this forum that our 10 bolts are weak and often break from hard launches with the M6's. I have also heard they hold up alot better with the A4's.
I recently discovered that my car has the 3.23 gears in it. My plan was to leave those gears in it (since it's a little better then 2.78's) and put in a vig 3200 stall 2.0 str TC & trans cooler. So look at my list of planned mods below and tell me if you think I will need a 12 bolt to handle the launches at the track when I am done or if my 10 bolt will still be ok. I have a TSP lid on order (be here next week) ASP Pulley SFC STB 3200 stall vig TC trans cooler LT headers with HF cats I doubt if I will ever feel the need for cams/heads or Nitrous so this list may conclude my mods. If I stop there then how would the 10 bolt handle the A4 launches with that mod list? Any help is as always extremely appreciated. |
Well with the stall the rearend will be put under more stress. Now I have a 98 Z with a Yank ST3500 3.42 gears and all the boltons I can do just about it. I got 0 and I mean zero traction at the track until I used ET Streets and guess what broke the second pass (You guessed it the rear). Anyways if you are not going to go to the strip or run Drag Radials or ET Streets you will probably be ok. If you are though trust me it will let go sometime or another. Good Luck and hope I was some help......

I think it's a crap shoot. I've known some guys with 4.11's running DR's that have lasted a long time with no problems yet. Then I've seen guys with 3.42's on a street tires blow them right away. Like Viper says, eventually the rearend will let go.

Well it is a hit or miss proposition. Id probably also look at getting a TA rear girdle and some new LCA with relocation brackets that will help take some stress of the rear end. The other thing is the gears themselves can give out not just your axles. I recently ordered a vig 3800 with 3.73s and will be running them on my 10 bolt with TA rear cover and new LCA with brackets. Ive got nitto drags so we will see how it holds up.

Well....................I went with 3.42s from a stick car, Eaton HD posi, welded the tubes to the center, Ratec collar, LCA relocator brackets, and a TA cover with support bolts. I have over 150 passes on ET streets with a ST3800 converter and run low-middle 12s on 1.64-1.7x 60s.
The TA cover is essential, remove all wheel hop, and preload the rear. |
