Open element air cleaner?

I was wondering if such a thing existed for the ls1. Like the used to have for most cars. One that sat on top of the engine, so you could get a cowl hood and get massive amounts of air to the engine. Any thoughts?

Those are usually for carbureted cars. Since LT1 and LS1 motors have front mounted throttle bodies and not top mounted ones I wouldn't imagine there being much of a performance increase. The air would have to curve around just as many turns as it would in a cold air intake setup. Unless you switch your manifold and setup your car with a carburetor I doubt you'd see any increases. I'm not even sure they have such a setup for LS1's. I've seen it for LT1's but that's a different beast. Overall, the expense of converting your air intake wouldn't be worth it since a ram air or cold air intake would achieve the same effect.

K&N makes the FIPK kit for our cars which is essentially an open element for front mounted throttle bodies. Its pricey though, expect to pay about $300 for it.

Here's a pic of the LS1 FIPK: http://www.i2.i-2000.com/~arcom/FIPK.jpg

Here's a decent pic of the K&N on an LT1: http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...415_9_full.jpg

You can't see the filter on the LT1 FIPK...it sits outside (under kinda) the engine compartment.

Maybe its just me but the LT1 FIPK seems like a waste to me. Ive seen a bunch of cars that mount the filter directly to the throttle body, and even though they would take in warmer air, they would take in much, much more air compared to the positioning of the FIPK unit.

But then there would be no room for the IAT and MAF sensors and after it goes past all that, whats one more bend gonna hurt. Especially if you can get colder air.
