need experienced header feedback

I have bud who is willing to sell me his used mac mid headers and y pipe for a great deal. I have a lid and flowmaster (don't give me **** about the flowmaster I've heard opionions.)

What will I gain from doing the headers. My car is fun daily driver. I drive it all year round and I don't really take it to the track much, just for fun. ARe they worth the cash and trouble to install. I'm hoping to get the package for $250.

For that price I'd get them. You should see around 15-25 rwp

mids won't be a problem to install. 15-25 rwhp is probably a little optimistic. maybe 10-15 tops.

Install should be easy. 250 is a good deal. I'll average Kataklysm and BirchMan and say 15-20rwhp. You might see more if you put a cutout in the I-pipe.

What about the sound...how much louder should I expect it to be. And will I need to have the SES reprogrammed?

It will sound really nice. I installed a set of Macs on a buddies 2000 WS6 and the only other mod he has is an open Borla and the car sounds sweet. It's just the way he likes it. As for the SES light, it depends on if you use an offroad pipe with sims are a catted pipe.

BTW, don't let them rag you about the Flowmaster.

Explain...I beleive the headers come with the y-pipe. Should I look for something in the setup to determine this?

Most LT headers come with an offroad y-pipe (no cats). You'll either have to:
Add cats,
Put simulators where your rear most O2 sensors were, or
Get your PMC reflashed with the rear O2s deleted.

I'm gonna go against the rest of the group here...

You're gonna spend $250 on the headers & y-pipe and then another $100 or so to get them coated...so you'll have spent about $350 at that point.

For about an extra $150 (including shipping) right now you can pick up a BRAND NEW set of COATED long tube headers & offroad y-pipe from texas speed & performance.

You'll see better performance out of long tubes than you will Mac mid length headers.

To me, its a no brainer...go w/the long tubes.

Re: need experienced header feedback

Another vote for the LT's, spend a lil more and do it right the first time. But u said that ur gonna get them from ur buddy and then ur sending em out to get coated....and then put them on in the winter? If ur gonna get them coated then wait till after winter to put them on, doesn't the coating get f'ed up with the salt on the streets. Not like ur gonna be using that extra power in the winter either. Like i said though, i'd take the LT's, better gains, better sounding, u can say u have LT's. The coating is to keep the headers a lil more cool to make a lil more power am i not right? So wouldn't uncoated LT's be making more power than coated mid's? maybe i'm wrong but like i said, if ur gonna do it, do it right the first time. As others have said before, go long or go home, make sure thats what u want and ur not just buying it cuz its better than what u got now and for a good price. Why is ur friend sellin them to u, maybe he realized doin LT's the first time is what he shoulda done cuz i doubt he's gonna be downgrading.

Re: need experienced header feedback

U R correct. He is doing LT's. His reasoning for the swap is he just did a cam/head install and was recommended by Speed Inc to do the swap with his particular set up. The reason I was thinking of buying his mids is because I've heard the mids are perfect for stock internal motors (there is no advantage of LT's vs. mids rolling mostly stock.) I have NO plans to do any internal engine work on the car. I want the car a little faster than stock but still managable to drive daily and take small road trips. Is this info correct?

Re: need experienced header feedback

I agree with you dyers, if you don't want to mess with the internals the mids will flow all you will ever need and still pick up some decent hp, since that isn't a bad deal on that setup id go with it, just wait till the summer to coat em IMO, good luck!
