Mod Suggestions

Hey,

I'm about to be a proud member of the LS1 community; about to pick up a '00 Trans Am with Ram Air. I'm looking at mods ahead of time. Here's what I'm looking to get so far:

- LS1 Motorsports Direct-Flo intake lid
- Granatelli calibrated mass airflow sensor
- Ported MAF ends
- Granatelli High Flow Calibrated MAF
- MAF translator
- 58mm throttle body
- Flowmaster (80 series probably?) dual exhaust

I'm basically an idiot as far as mods go, are any of these repetitive, or wasteful on the 00 Ram Air equipt LS1 engine? Any suggestions, or further mods would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

You definately want to get the lid as one of your're first mods. It's probably one of the best for the money. As for the MAF and MAF related mods, most guys on this message board say they felt little or no difference at all from the MAF. It doesn't seem to matter what brand they have, most say it wasn't worth it. Also I have a Borla full cat exhaust and this was by far the mod that I felt the most difference from. Im not sure if the Trans Am has a tuned exhaust like the SS does but if it does then exhaust probably isnt worth it either.

Oh yeah by the way welcome to the LS1 community!!!!!

Any other comments on this? What are the typical mods people get with a fairly new WS6 (it's the same as the 2001 year, correct)?

Sounds good, but if you are getting a Grenetelli why would you need ported mass air flow ends, they already come that way. Plus it doesn't really add much to a stock car without internal engine work. I would hold up on the mass air meter and get some gears, to answer what size i need to know if it is an automatic or a manual. The lid and exhaust are a good first. I would look into a catback instead of just a muffler. Borla, corsa, B&B, although expensive make excellent 3 inch stainless steal catbacks. Or you could just through a cutout onto the WS6 exhaust that ramair has.

Hey,

Excuse the ignorance, but what in the hell is a cutout for exhaust? It should explain itself...is it basically just putting a whole in the pipe? Also, what's the difference between a catback, and just mufflers? Catback is basically the entire system, allowing more overall air flow?

Here's a good cutout explanation:

As for Mods for your car. It all depends on what you are going to do with your car. Drag race, daily driver, show car?

As for me mine is a daily driver with occasional time at the track to vent(LEGALLY).

I just installed a Hotchkis Strut brack (this goes over the motor) and it made a difference in the handling of the car. I also just installed a set of Kenny Brown Double Diamond SFC's (sub frame connectors). Big difference there as well. With the SFC my exhaust is still lower than the SFC. Plenty of ground clearance. My next step is to lower the car. It's just a thought. I hope this helps. See my signature for my MODS. I also have a Corsa Exhaust. I love it. But it's expensive. I guess you get what you pay for.

Hey,

That's what I figured it was; are their certan limits to how much air a cutout can flow, or are they all legal / illegal, or what? Obviously, it's not too enviornment-friendly; just wondering what the legalities of these are.

I have a 01 Z28. Looking over your list of mods, they are pretty good. Suggestions:

As someone else said, the Granatelli has ported ends.

If you are getting a MAFT, then I would suggest you get the SLP 85 mm MAF (larger ID will flow more than the Granatelli). The MAFT will allow you to calibrate it yourself.

The larger TB for an LS1 is 80 mm (BBK). I just installed one this weekend. LOVE IT!!! The first time I drove it my friend was in the car with me and the car snapped both of our necks HARD!

DON'T get the flowmaster. I have it and it’s coming off as soon as my Loudmouth comes in. It really cut some HP out of the car. Sounds good but I think the Loudmouth will sound just as good and will give me more HP.

If I were doing my car over, this is what I would do:

- LS1 Motorsports Direct-Flow intake lid
- SLP 85 MM MAF
- MAF translator
- 80mm BBK throttle body
- Loudmouth (Dynomouth.... if you don't mind moding the stock exhaust and save $$$)
- LT headers

- SLP bolt on subframes
- G2 springs (going to change to their coil overs when I have the money...)
- Hotchkis Strut Tower brace

(the suspention stuff I have and it has worked really good)

Not to down grade SLP but I wouldn't get them due to the clearance issue. Plus they are a lot heaver than the ones I have on my car. I had checked them out while I was at SLP day and can't figure out why there is a huge lip on them. Again it's just my .02. Sorry if this nakes you think twice about this but it might be for the good.
