Angry Missed shift - broken valve? **update

Heading down to the track tonight missed a shift for the first time ever like this, and I guess it all caught up to me. Was in third about 5000 rpms and went to shift to fourth, nope...hit second.

Ok, so I'm pissed. SES light on immediatly (never went off on the 20 mile drive home), rough rough low (500) idle for a while, rough in every gear below 1500 rpm. I let it sit for a while, cleared up the low idle speed, but it's still rough everywhere. Noise is quite distinct outside of the car. Almost like a tapping, brushing like noise. Kinda sounds like its fluttering too. I'm pretty sure it's a valve. Had a few buddies listen, most were clueless, one said a valve spring, I thought just a bent pushrod at first (actually I was really hoping for just that), but I think it's a valve.

Any other ideas? And what's it cost to get a valve replaced or something in the similar area?

Stop. do not drive it any more than you have to.

The bent pushrod is probably gouging out your heads and whatnot. The valves are most likey bent too.

You might as well bring it to a shop and get a heads and cam package.

Ok, the more and more I read about it...the more I'm thinking it's just a broken valve spring. I don't think I've dropped the valve yet. *Hopefully*

Any ballpark estimates on getting that repaired + adding some hardened pushrods as obviously some of mine will be bent?

Don't just add hardened pushrods. Change all of the valvesprings as well to the 2002 LS6 Valvespring. Actually, the pushrods aren't the problem here, the problem is over-revving the engine by mis-shifting and having a relatively low-seat pressure on the valve spring. Basically the RPM limit for the spring is not much higher than the red-line on the tach. If you cram the car into 2nd instead of 4th, or 3rd instead of 5th, the engine will over-rev well beyond the electronic rev limit and it will bend the pushrods. Putting in a harder pushrod just guarantees that you will bend valves (not to say that you haven't done that already).

I did this before in my Z

I floated a valve...it was pretty d@mn bad. I'm not sure how much I paid for in labor, but it was about 2 grand by the time I got my car back. I recently broke a valve spring in the SS, just from normal freeway driving, the two didn't feel anything alike. broken valve spring thing only cost me a few hundred bucks...hopefully thats what happened to you.

Update, good news so far

Got the car in to be looked at today. Wasn't burning oil so that was an initial good sign. Compression check, perfect.

Somehow I blew out the coil packs and plug wires on 5 and 6.

The guy who was checking out my car left for the day so he's gonna continue tomorrow morning. This is a lot better news than I thought, no internal damage so far.

Very good point. I've heard a lot about people over reving and bending pushrods but I never thought about what would happend if the pushrods were stronger. If something has to absorb the effects of an over reved engine, better it be the pushrods.

Another update for those who care

Finished checking the car over today. Somehow my 5 and 6 injectors are now bad. Apparently they sucked in some carbon or whatever when the coils blew.

So now I need two coil packs and two injectors. Well, I guess that's better than a dropped valve.

for sure! If you are planning on spraying nitrous or running boost later, you ought to just upgrade all the fuel injectors to bigger ones now, because you will have to later. not sure what your plans are.

WOW I didn't know you could do all that damage just missing a shift, are you sure the mechanics are just blowing smoke up your hole.

LOL...yah I'm sure, I've been taking my cars to the same guy for years, and we are pretty good buddies. If you had driven the car you would have known. I had misfires in 4 cylinders, two floated valves, and then needed retuning because I was running ungodly rich. After I did it, the car shut off, and I couldn't get it to restart for about 5 minutes, and luckily I was near my house because it barely made it. I was doing about 85 when I hit second and the wheels locked up completely. So anyways, I hate the stock shifters with a passion.
