LS6 Really 405hp? Or over rated?

I was wondering if anyone here has ran there stock LS6 on a dyno or seen any dyno numbers for a stock LS6?

Now I know GM started rating the LS6 405hp in 02. And earlier LS6s are rated 385hp.

Im just trying to figure out if GM over rated the LS6.

I see people running big cams and ported heads and just making over 400hp. So that makes the LS6 look like it may be over rated. So if anyone has any info please post.

I'm speaking strictly on personal experience, never seen a stock Z06 dyno. However I was completely surprised when I ran the 1/4 with one, I ran a 13.0, and I finished at the rear bumper of the Z06. It probably was a horrible driver but if they really have that much power, how does that happen. That would be like a Nissian Spec V finishing at my bumper.

That 405 hp rating is at the flywheel. Factories don't rate power based on what actually gets to the rear wheels.

Once it goes through the rest of the drivetrain (clutch, driveshaft, transaxle) a manual transmission car loses between 10%-12% of that power to heat and friction. That's why a stock, "275 hp" LT1 car will usually dyno around 250 to the wheels.

From what I have read on the 02 to 04 ZO6’s is that they typically dyno at around 360-370 RWHP. Also the 01’s were under rated but there were some differences between a 01 and 02-04 models. I believe that there was small difference in the cam, heads and exhaust but that was about it between the years. An 01 ZO6 would dyno between 10-15hp less then a 02 to 04 ZO6. The fastest I’ve seen a 02 ZO6 run on a track was a 12.12 in the ¼. But that was a completely stock one straight from a dealership with less then 1000 miles on it, which the deanship owner brought out to see what it could do. You add a set of drag radials on one and it’s easily in the 11’s.

im pretty sure the 02-04 Z06 had different cam, heads and intake manifold than the 2001's.

check out www.Z06vette.com they will tell you...

The LS6 is underrated.

GMHTP tested one in the March '05 issue and it made 416.8 HP and 401 FT-LBS.

Agreed. It's definitely not over-rated.

I've been reading around a little bit on corvetteforum, and it seems there are a lot (the majority) of Z06's in the low 12's, and there are quite a few in mid-high 11's with drag radials alone, or very basic mods (often just an intake).

The difference between '01 and '02-'04 was mostly in the exhaust I believe. Something about they used different manifolds (I think? ) and they had 4 cats vs. only 2 from '02-'04. I'm sure the heads are the same, but I can't remember about the camshaft.....it may have been the same all the way through?

I was at the track one time and a guy was running a Z06, and was only getting ~13.2 out of it. Well, I've run 13.0 with my Z28.....it's definitely a driver issue. Like I said, lots of them in low 12's, high 11's.

Oh yeah, if any motor is under-rated, it's the LS2.

In 01 I went to the track with a buddy who just got a new z06. All he had was a ripper shifter and ran a 12.3xx @116-17. They get it on so if you see one run anywhere near a 13.xx its like a f bod runing a 14.xx. The guy must have been a retard.........................

GMHTP tested a bone stock 04 ZO6 and it went 11.98@118. Not to bad, and I have seen DR cars only in the mid 11's with like 1.7,1.8 60'

I've personally seen a Z06 dyno at 350hp with minor exhaust work. I was wondering where the other 55 horses went?

Like said above, GM rates these motors at the flywheel. The Z06 you seen dyno got the numbers from the rear wheels. The 55 horses went through the drivetrain and got lost. Happens on every vehicle.

A friend of mine pulled a 12.20 in his 04 Z06 with 5000 miles on it. The first time we went he couldn't break into the 12's and everyone was talking about how the Z06 was overrated. After he learned how to drive it and went back to the track and pulled 12.20 the same guys talking crap jumped on the bandwagon. I have to agree with most and say that if anything it's underated.
