Ls1 Vs. Lt1

Hey guys... I'm definitely buying a Camaro as soon as I sell my other car. I'm looking at being able to afford somewhere in the '97-'99 range. I love the 30th Anniversary White with orange huggers, but I know they changed to the LS1 with more power in 1998... So my question is, what are the benefits of both? Should I avoid '98 because it was the first year for the LS1 and it had kinks to be worked out? or is it so superior to the previous gen. that it is worht it? Thanks for the help!

Re: Ls1 Vs. Lt1

i am an LT1 owner so take this with a grain of salt. i have debated with myself weather or not i should have gotten an LS1 instead and i think i should have for the following reason. i will never nitrous or supercharge my car. most of what i have read shows the bottom end of the LT1 to be a bit stouter than the LS1 (not calling anyone out just saying what i have come across) it can take the occasional 150 shot without abuse (if there is such a thing when you have the magic bottle). i have a mechanic buddy who has seen way more bottom end LS1 probs than the LT1. if you just want to stick with the normal bolt ons i would go LS1. if you really want to make 400 ish rwhp on a daily driver i would go the LT1. hope that helps.

LS1>LT1
piston slap at start up>optispark

More power and better gas mileage.

No way! It's way easier to do with an LS1 IMO. Figure, most stock LS1's can dyno in the neighborhood of ~300 rwhp, so you only need another ~100 HP to make 400. What do most stock LT1's make, ~250 rwhp?

I'd say go LS1. My buddy regrets getting a '96 for that reason.

Is it time for another one of these threads already??

That said, LS1>LT1.

P.S. Do a search. This topic comes up at least once a month.

Re: Ls1 Vs. Lt1

Well I have owned many a fbody in the last 4 years. I have had a 98 T/A, 97 Z28, 97 T/A and my current 99 Z28. As far as engines go, the LS1 is the superior engine. The LT1 is heavier and produces less power and worse gas mileage. I LOVE both engines. But I would choose an LS1 over an LT1 anyday of the week. The LS1 is also WAY easier to work on. Besides not many things are better lookin than a 98+ WS6 Trans Am!

Re: Ls1 Vs. Lt1

I have owned 2 LT1 cars and currently own an 02 Z28.
The LT1 is definantly a meaner car at Low RPMs, but the the top end of the LS1 is amazing

Overall I would say LS1, but if all your looking for is a mean bolt on daily driver you can't go wrong either way. Both cars have more than enough grunt to get you around in daily driving traffic/highway blasts. I would say look around and get a car that is best maintained, in your price range, and that is the car you like. Good luck and happy hunting!

BTW: I will always love the 93 ~ 97 Camaro Front end WAAAY more than the 98+

Re: Ls1 Vs. Lt1

the LS1 is a bad a$$ motor. like everyone just said it makes alot more power and less money to make over 400rwhp. i would definitely take the ls1 over the lt1 though i have never rode in one. ive just been pretty happy with my LS1 as far as performance and power. but all that talk between the ls1 and lt1 just depends on what you plan on doing with the car and how much you plan on spending and what your goals are.

Re: Ls1 Vs. Lt1

here is a dyno overlay of a 1994 Corvette and a 2001 Z28. The Z has a lid and catback and the Vette has an air foil (5-10 HP over stock). Sorry there is no direct low end tq. comparrison, but I have seen similar overlays and contrary to popular beleif, the LS1 has more low end tq. At least the 2001-2002 Ls1's do, as they have a cam that produces more tq than the pre 2001 LS1.
