LS1 vs LQ9

Guys my friend found an Escalade engine for sale and it seems like a decent price. He wants to drop it into 3rd gen Camaro. Can anyone tell me if its worth to buy engine like that? What are the differences between LQ9 and LS1?

Thanks

It's a 6.0 iron block with a 10:1 compression, it's just waiting for forced induction. Around 65lbs heavier than the LS1

Does it have same dimensions as LS1? extrerior wise?

Also can T56 tranny be attached to it?

Yes, the intake manifold might be a little taller than an LS1, but it is the same design. He should look into getting an LS6 intake for it though, lower profile to fit under the hood. Everything should bolt up fine.

when CHP tested all the intakes for the LS1 they found that the truck intake made just as much HP as the LS6 and i think a little more torque. both compared to the stock ls1 intake.

so unless clearance is an issue, you can just stick with the truck intake.

i'm sure he'll want a cowl hood anyway

Sound great!

so because it has iron block that means its better engine to use for a turbo setup right?

in theory yes, but aluminum motors will do nicely for forced induction too (to a point)

if he's serious about doing a turbo setup however, the compression is a bit high for anything more than low boost.

Yes the comp ratio would limit you to about 6-7lbs and around 500 rwhp.

Ok guys we went to see it today, and guy seemed to be like a very nice guy and engine looks in very mint condition. I didn't like 2 things about the engine though. the smell of the oil it felt like it was a bit burned.. and on the throttle body it has some oil behind the plate ... he said it was to keep it lubricated.. what you guys think?

He could have just sprayed it down with wd40 to keep it from developeing surface rust.

As far as the truck intake netting the same hp as the LS6. Is this proven? If so how much does the LQ9 intake cost as compared to the LS6?

i dunno about anyone else, but personally i think the LQ9 intake is HUGE...i dunno what kind of hood you'd need to fit that thing under there...

Re: LS1 vs LQ9

The LQ9 intake will of course provide more torque, it is put into trucks! Trucks need more lowend torque to get moving since they are heavier than cars. The reason they are so huge is because the intake runner length is much longer than an LS1/6 intake. That extra length will kill top end power and won't be able to rev as high. The LS1/6 intakes were design to work with cars and the runner length was tuned for this application. If you can find a goiod deal on an LS5 intake, go for it. The LQ9 will work, but you will have to use a different hood as it will not clear the stock hood profile of a 3rd gen.

Re: LS1 vs LQ9

guys, doesnt TONS of fabrication work need to be done to fit an LS1 in a 3rd gen??? Does your friend know what he's getting into? after reading reviews of other people doing this, it seems a VERY expensive project that only the mechanically inclined should attempt. that is, unless they have started making kits for the task?? have they??

Yes but when done right the results are awesome.
